Ek Balam is worth a visit if you are in Valladolid. quote:
ORIGINAL: Tracie Is it worth a trip? Is there enough to see and explore by itself and if not what would it be best combined with? Also how long of a drive? I have always wanted to see the Cathedral. What day would be the busiest and most exciting? We are doing 2 weeks this time and I would like to do something more than fishing and the usual. Thanks!

The restaurant sound like the one in hotel El meson del Marques. We love Valladolid, the architecture it beautiful. Nearby are the ruins of Ek Balam, which in my opinion should not be missed. Also cenote Zaci right in town. San Bernardino monastery San Gervasio chruch, (the one on the square) Santa Lucia is a smaller historical church on the outskirts of the city going towards Ek Balam. La Candelaria church quote:
ORIGINAL: easy572 I have been there 3 times, the most recent in June. We enjoy a leisurely drive over there. It takes about an hour or maybe a little more. We go to the old restaurant on the square that has an open air center. Hard to explain but there is a court yard in the middle. Very old sturcture but the food is wonderful. I had the soup which was like tortilla soup but much better. Go on the weekend and there should be all kinds of vendors around the square. Mexican dresses, napkins, handkerchiefs, etc. all embroidered by hand. The church is outstanding. Good Luck. Easy572

Thank you for these photos. It certainly looks like Valladolid warrants a couple of days to explore.

I just want to second Casa de los Venados. Amazing restoration tastefully stuffed full of Mexican Folk Art. It was really a highlight for me. I love it!

I recommend leaving supppperrrrrr early in the morning as in Rooster wake up time - go to the ruins before the bus tour groups arrive then have lunch in Vallidolid .. I highly recommend hiring a car - is easy to find parkin in behind the buildings adjacent the main square. You could tour around for a while then make it home in time for supper Coba Ruins are close as well and or Chichen Itza - Hire a guide, its well worth the money and the peddlers wont harass you while your with a guide

Tracie, Don't rule out Ek Balam, a Google search turned this post from TA up: I was at Ek Balam on nov 9, 2011. I had a fall at home and could not walk very far tried to make but could not. My wife sent for a pedi cab and they came right away and we finished the tour. You can order a pedi bike at the parking lot. I paid 100 pesos with a 50 peso tip. At the end of the tour they pedal back to the parking lot.

The only real climbing at Ek Balam is the one pyramid. Everything else is quite accessable. You'll do as much (or more) walking at the Tequila tour and walking the square in Valladolid than at Ek Balam.

We spent a night in Valladolid - escaping from Ernesto a couple of weeks ago. We didn't make it to Casa de los Venados, but I wish we had. Tour is only at 10am each day. The chocolate museum - is this the place along Calzada de los Frailes? There isn't much to see, really. We popped in there during the rain. I did buy some chocolate....I liked it. Taza out of Somerville, MA makes a more refined version of the process. We had an incredible lunch at Taberna de los Frailes. We ate for two hours. It was a highlight of our entire trip; we are food people. We had to tip our waiter above and beyond since we inquired about each sauce and preparation...and he graciously described the details and ingredients. I think they open at 1pm. The restaurant is behind the Convent of San Bernardino. This is a must stop. Amazing building, nature, history. Along Calzada de los Frailes is Coqui Coqui - it's worth a stop just to marvel at the floors!! Lol!!
