Is it worth a trip? Is there enough to see and explore by itself and if not what would it be best combined with? Also how long of a drive? I have always wanted to see the Cathedral. What day would be the busiest and most exciting? We are doing 2 weeks this time and I would like to do something more than fishing and the usual. Thanks!

I have been there 3 times, the most recent in June. We enjoy a leisurely drive over there. It takes about an hour or maybe a little more. We go to the old restaurant on the square that has an open air center. Hard to explain but there is a court yard in the middle. Very old sturcture but the food is wonderful. I had the soup which was like tortilla soup but much better. Go on the weekend and there should be all kinds of vendors around the square. Mexican dresses, napkins, handkerchiefs, etc. all embroidered by hand. The church is outstanding. Good Luck.

Ek Balam is worth a visit if you are in Valladolid.

The restaurant sound like the one in hotel El meson del Marques.
We love Valladolid, the architecture it beautiful. Nearby are the ruins of Ek Balam, which in my opinion should not be missed.
Also cenote Zaci right in town.
San Bernardino monastery
San Gervasio chruch, (the one on the square)
Santa Lucia is a smaller historical church on the outskirts of the city going towards Ek Balam.
La Candelaria church

Lots of good, tiny comida corrida restaurants surrounding the market that's located just a couple blocks past the cenote if you're walking from the zocalo. Valladolid is also a good place to go shoe shopping -- if you have little tiny Maya-sized feet.

making an assumption here that you don't! :)

The family-run shoemakers shop is at the other end of the square, directly opposite the church....cool place!

Ek Balam is maybe 20 minutes or a half hour north of Valladolid. When I visited two years ago, there were several cabs in the Ek Balam parking lot. I assume they came from Valladolid and were waiting to run their passengers back to town.

Valladolid is a wonderful place to visit. We went in Jan for a few days. Ek Balam, Cenote Xkeken, Iglesia de San Gervasio, the plaza in town. All wonderful places. Meson is good but is probably the priciest place in town. We stayed at Colonial Aurora. Two blocks from the main square and a super hotel for $50 a night (less than half of Meson). There are good places to eat on the square, Compadres
We would go back in a heartbeat. In late Jan there was a huge fair going on with a corrida and music and dancing

Thank you for these photos. It certainly looks like Valladolid warrants a couple of days to explore.

Wow what a wealth of information!
Laura mapchick ~what would be your suggestion as far as what time to leave the resort (Oasis Tulum) and in which order for all you mentioned? How long in Valladolid, ruins first or second (early November trip) how long for ruins?

Thank you all for the fabulous info! Its funny, for years I have been saying "honey when we get older and i don't want to sit in the sun all day, I wanna go see Valladolid!"
That time has arrived!! ( and now our knees are bad! LOL!

Tracie...I'm not Map Chick but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once. I would go to the ruins first, as soon as they open up. Gauge your time to leave the resort to opening time at Ek Balam. An hour and a half to two hours at the ruins is about what it takes to see it. Get a guide and do the tour with them. On the way back to V-Town you might want to stop at the town of Tizmin(sp) we saw some beautiful wooden furniture there. Then you can take as much time as you want in V-Town.
Have a great time.

Temozon is indeed a furniture making center, and is also known for its carne ahumada -- hard, smoked sausage that a lot of people love. (Me, not so much.)

If you are at all into Mexican folk art I would highly suggest a visit here:

I recommend leaving supppperrrrrr early in the morning as in Rooster wake up time - go to the ruins before the bus tour groups arrive then have lunch in Vallidolid .. I highly recommend hiring a car - is easy to find parkin in behind the buildings adjacent the main square.  You could tour around for a while then make it home in time for supper
Coba Ruins are close as well and or Chichen Itza - Hire a guide, its well worth the money and the peddlers wont harass you while your with a guide

What time frame do you think we will need for this itinerary?
Distileria Artesenal de Gave tour
Chocolate Museum
Lunch
Cenote Zaci
Monastery San Berdino de Diena
Shopping

We aren't doing Ek Balam. We have someone with an foot brace that definitely cannot do rough terrain and lots of stairs.
Also is there anything to be seen on the way to and from Valladolid? The direct drive is 1 1/2 hrs?
Thank you!

Tracie,

Don't rule out Ek Balam, a Google search turned this post from TA up:

I was at Ek Balam on nov 9, 2011. I had a fall at home and could not walk very far tried to make but could not. My wife sent for a pedi cab and they came right away and we finished the tour. You can order a pedi bike at the parking lot. I paid 100 pesos with a 50 peso tip. At the end of the tour they pedal back to the parking lot.

The only real climbing at Ek Balam is the one pyramid. Everything else is quite accessable. You'll do as much (or more) walking at the Tequila tour and walking the square in Valladolid than at Ek Balam.

We spent a night in Valladolid - escaping from Ernesto a couple of weeks ago.

We didn't make it to Casa de los Venados, but I wish we had. Tour is only at 10am each day.

The chocolate museum - is this the place along Calzada de los Frailes? There isn't much to see, really. We popped in there during the rain. I did buy some chocolate....I liked it. Taza out of Somerville, MA makes a more refined version of the process.

We had an incredible lunch at Taberna de los Frailes. We ate for two hours. It was a highlight of our entire trip; we are food people. We had to tip our waiter above and beyond since we inquired about each sauce and preparation...and he graciously described the details and ingredients. I think they open at 1pm.

The restaurant is behind the Convent of San Bernardino. This is a must stop. Amazing building, nature, history.

Along Calzada de los Frailes is Coqui Coqui - it's worth a stop just to marvel at the floors!! Lol!!
