So the wife and I want to make at least 1 day trip on our Jan 2013 trip to the Akumal area to Tulum. We really enjoy just walking the beach stopping off at places to either eat get a drink maybe take a dip in the water if nice place to do so. We really like laid back type atmoshpere. Like to browse little shops as well. So if coming from Akumal waht do you suggest is best way to get there ( we like using collectivos when possible ) and where would you start the beach walk & which direction would you go? We have printed off copy of beach map. Also for a future trip where would you suggest a place to stay? We like something with a pool if possible otherwise really good beach / water access.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You'll love Tulum - here's my suggestion - others will chime in. Colectivo to Tulum then cab to Hip hotel - somewhere around there and just walk north stopping along the way at the various places. Ziggy's (at Cabanas Tulum) has a 2 for 1 special during the day.

Then when your done just walk back to the beach road and hail a cab back to Tulum and catch the colectivo back - or cab it all the way back to your hotel - the first way I mentioned is much more economical.

Also I did a search for you - you can check out the various threads on this subject - have fun and bring your camera to share your adventures with us!

You can walk from the ruins - take the collectivo there, then head along the wall encircling the ruins and head towards the beach. Nice path with iguanas, great ruin views. Eventually you'll come to all the funky cabanas, stop for a drink at one, food at the next....or vice versa. Then cab back to Tulum pueblo and hop the collective back to Akumal or talk your cabbie into taking you all the way back. You should be comfortably numb by then.

LOL hubby is trying really hard to convince me to move to the Tulum area. Seriously. Any thoughts?

What is your current nationality status? As a tourist you can only stay 3 months. I would say try it for that long and see. You'll miss a lot but you'll learn to appreciate the beautiful things too. At least I do when I'm there. Read the expat forum on Tulum.info for additional insight. If you are financially independent, it would be a great life experience.

Thanks Doug!!! We live in Oklahoma....somehow I can't imagine pulling up stakes and moving. But it would be nice to be wealthy enough to have a home there......(sigh)

We're only here for such a short time. Life is too short to regret anything. Try it out!
