Terrell the Lurker & others that we met @ ABR April 16-23 This trip report is so late! My original plan was to do it in two parts. First this short piece which I was going to get done before before I got buried in doing my company taxes and then later a more in depth one covering the lessons I learned and relearned. I never even got around to writing a TR for our Christmas and New Years trip to ABR which was absolutely phenomenal. . This was our 3rd visit to ABR inside of a year. This trip we seemed to meet more people/characters than any other trip. On our first trip the only LGer we met was KingFisher. On our second trip we met Shellusea. I have to start with the self-confessed lurker, Terrell from Texas. He admitted to reading all the LG forums and benefiting tremendously from the wealth of knowledge therein. He said that he was unable to join in because he couldn’t get his profile pic set up!! I promised this lazy, no-account, “all hat and no cattle” Texan, that I would OUT him publicly. His wife, Dorothy, saint that she is for putting up with him, is a wonderful lady. Terrell’s other transgression is caught for posterity, posing for a pic within 6 feet of a turtle. I am happy to say the turtle had the good sense to realize it was only Terrell and ignored him and kept eating. For some reason folks back in Texas don’t believe everything Terrell says, so he needed to prove that he really was swimming with the turtles. Terrell &Turtle We met another confessed lurker who was attracted by our LG coolers. Jayne and Clare(nce), from Michigan. Jayne also had issues setting up her account. I think she missed the [apply] at the end of the profile. Jayne n Clare Even though this trip was two weeks before AASB we met a good number of LGers. We met all the LGers but one while drinking, so what does it say about LGers? PuppyLove and Fordx4man; we met at the main bar, LOL they live just down the road from us in and the same town as my Bro and SIL. Fidget; no surprise here, we met at the Moonrise just as she had announced. Iggey9802, full props for her, she was walking down the beach when she saw our coolers and stopped at our palapa. Not that we didn’t meet her again once or twice within arms length of a bar! AkumalDreams was again at the Moonrise. And then there is other honeymooners, the vivacious and well tanned Melhosler and her DH Brent. DW and I were trying to have a quiet conversation with Wilbert when Mel just jumps right and and says to my DW “Hi I am Mel aren’t you...” and there went the quiet drink. She and my DW have been emailing each other since the minute we got back, working on Project “Electric Lemonade”, watch out Brent! Look forward to seeing you at Christmas. This project is named after a tasty drink that Timhy makes. It is really good as a painkiller as well being a great beach beverage and not at all tuti fruti. This is not the kind of drink you put a paper umbrella in, or serve to your mother. It will sneak up and slap you down on your butt, even if you are already sitting. All these cool people, and we were only there for a week. The other trips were for 2 weeks. Most of our old friends were there, El Tigre, Papi Carlos was back, Wilbert, Timhy, Clemente, Filipe, Wilberth, Juan, Jeshua, Marianne, Carlos (x3), Alex, Shy, Arturo, Luis (x2), Renato, Alejandro, Roger, and we met the new chef who replace Emilio, Luz. We arrived after midnight. There was no porter so we just left the bags and walked up to reception. Holy Score! Room 401, YES! YES! YES! Someone in maintenance blues got our bags and tried to pantomime that we were to follow him. I gave him a wad of pesos and DW told him in her version of Spanish that we were return visitors and knew our way. By this time we were at the main bar and Clemente was shouting a greeting at us. The maintenance man visibly relax and headed off. In an instance there was before us, the empty glasses from 3 rounds of tequila shots. Most amazing, as neither DW nor I like the stuff. I blame Clemente. I would never, never voluntarily drink on top of my prescription meds. Clemente & DW So we stumble to our room. It was cold. The air conditioning had been turned on and set to max chill. I turned it off. There were sandwiches and bananas waiting for us as requested. It was so nice to be back again! Did I say we really scored, as we got room 401. I am in full agreement that newbies or the faint of heart should not get a standard room on their first visit. We love this place, so I did not see the chipped and discolored tiles or the grouting that needed redoing. I like the weird shaped lamps and since I only used the room for sleeping and showering I didn’t notice that it was poorly lit. In fact it had all the right lighting for our activities. I saw a very clean functional room located right on the beach. There was lots of floor space for our luggage. The awesome patio had a door that locked, 2 chairs and a tabler. Only used the patio once during a brief rain shower. For me 401 is the most run down room that I have ever stayed in. For me it is also the best room. It is right on the beach where I want to be. The first morning we were up out at our usual time. We will always be winners at the towel game, even sleeping in an hour, still gets us on the beach for sunrise. There were clouds and wind as I read for an hour before breakfast. My bro and SIL found us in the buffet. They had arrived eight hours before us and were in building 6. We really suck at food porn pics because we always forget to take pictures before we start eating. Actually, we are usually done eating by the time we remember to take a pic! DW’s favourite is the breakfast nachos. For me it was an effort not to have an omelette every morning. This trip I was successful in not pigging out on the bacon or sausage. Not that it mattered, I still gained weight! The sun peaked through the clouds but the wind was up and the flags were red as far as the Moonrise. Big bummer as we love snorkelling several times a day. After lunch we decided we would walk up the beach into the village. The family gave me a one drink head start as I really can’t move that fast. Hey I am just so happy to be able to walk again and I was in paradise! It was a trip full of clouds and rain for the first 4 days. Am I ever happy we went! I was surprised by my DW with a summer trip to see the nesting turtles for my birthday. I now have one day left to figure out how to post pics and get the rest of my report done. Oh yeah I have to pack as well, but that is the easy part.
