I am wanting to take my daughter to an AI resort in Mexico and RM is one are I am looking at. I am a "youngish" 42 and she is 20. We are looking for somewhere to lay on the beach, relax and unwind. Some shopping, a little culture and maybe some snorkling, We are no looking for adventures or a huge party time. We do enjoy drinks, and a variety of different music, we would enjoy a "club-like" maybe one or two nights and live music or piano bars also. We are adventerous eaters and foodies, so the food would need to be above just average. Also price is a consideration, so not the fanciest resort.
My biggest issue seems to be finding somewhere that is not full of children, but also where we would not be the only non-couple. Maybe somewhere you would advise a group of girlfriends going away together?
Thanks so much for your advice!

Welcome to Loco Gringo!

I just finished putting together a Mom & Daughter trip for this fall. For us, Akumal Beach Resort fits all of our needs. It is not fancy, but comfortable and the location, beach and available snorkeling can't be beat!.. There is not a lot of night life, but generally a great group of people there to hang out with. ( Check the Party Thread to see who will be visiting during your time choice.) Food is good, but not exceptional. There are several great local restaurants within walking distance. Easy spot for day trips to area sites of interest and shopping!

There are often family groups, single people and Moms and Daughters and groups of friends. Not a rowdy young party crowd there ....well ....except for AASB in the spring.

Just my thoughts.....I'm sure there will be other recommendations!

We're there the end of October.

We are big fans of the Akumal Beach Resort. The village within an easy walk is nice. You might look at the Catalonia Royal Tulum, adults only. Better food selection and several nicer restaurants. The ABR definitlely a friendlier resort in our opinion.

I have been to the Palladium (Riviera Maya and Jamaica) many times with my daughter who is now 21. RM consists of four resorts plus a fifth Royal area. Guests at all four can use all amenities including unlimited ala cartes, vast beach areas, and as much to do or not do as you wish. Depending on when you go you will not find a lot of kids (Fall) or will find a lot of kids (Christmas and Easter). BTW Christmas and Easter are the most expensive times so if you avoid those times you will get better prices and find fewer kids.

If I were planning a mother daughter trip like you described, to be honest I wouldn't go to ABR simply because the food is not the above average on a regular basis. No piano bar, or club whatsoever. The main bar has entertainment, but, not at all a club type atmosphere. They have something different most nights, ie a live latin band one night, a two piece group with recorded backup another night, Mr Akumal contest one night and Miss Akumal another night, it just doesn't get much more party like than that, which suits us, but, doesn't sound like the club you are looking for. Other than that, ABR fits perfectly. I would look more at the Palladium if I were you. I've heard great things about it, and the food is described as top notch. We haven't been there yet, but, plan to on a trip where it's just the two of us and we are looking for something more than a three star resort. We know we'll be sacrificing the quiet paradise of ABR, but, sometimes you just want a bit of a higher end vacation.

My daughter and I spent 10 days in March together it was great. If you wanted you could walk into town and eat and drink. We also did a day trip to Isla Mujeres and was well worth it. I agree that ABR was the perfect location plus centerally located to travel either direction, Hope you have a great time!!!

Hiya Kkaisu,

Sounds to me like your daughter and yourself may enjoy staying at a resort in Playacar. Gated community. 5 dollar cab right( or walk)to Playa Del Carmen for shopping, restaurants, clubs, people watching, etc.

I've stayed at a few resorts there. I have stayed at the Wyndham Azteca twice there, is a good option because you can use their sister resort, The Maya Wyndham, as it is bigger with a club and all the sports and action too, then you can go back and stay at the quiter resort, the Azteca, hehehe. It can get lively in the lounge there too though. They are only like 3 resorts apart, so is nice to use both, and all the ala carts too.

You have tons of nice beach along there too. Geez I sound Like I am selling the place hey? hehehehe Point being is, Playacar is a nice area, safe and fun. Shopping is close, everything is close. Pic a great deal and just go!

Akumal area is so nice too but it is quieter and you sound like you gals want to mix it up abit.

Cheers!

Doug

We have been to the Riu in Playacar twice, and the Grand Sirenis twice and Akumal. Our favorite is Akumal mainly because it is quiet and laid back. In MHO I would say that the closer to Playa Del Carmen you are the more bars and restautants and shopping you will be able to sample. The Grand Sirensis is closer to Akumal and is a nice compromise resort with a bit of everything, they do have a disco on site, snorkling off the beach and an expresso bar. The collectivo or a cab ride to Playa or Akumal is about the same price, a ten to fifteen minute ride either way.
As far as food, my experience is it is all about the same at most of the AI,s. I personaly dont have a favorite AI because they all have their own Pros and Cons, and we have enjoyed them all.

I

You didn't indicate what your budget was, but based on your description I would look at the Royal in Playa, Valentin Imperial and Secrets Silversands. These are adults-only all inclusives with good food and some entertainment options. The Royal in particular for the shopping/club aspect but it can be pretty pricey.

You have come to the right place to ask questions for sure. One question that comes to mind that you did not address and might be helpful is...how important is the room to you? If this is not a concern and just the basics suit you then the ABR would likely fit your needs if location is most important. The beach is stunning and being able to walk into the town there also would be great. Safe and clean location for two ladies also. No selling on the beach so you can always find a place to sit and relax without constant interruptions. It is a family resort so not sure about the kids issues there...have not stayed there personally but walked by it many times and it has a huge fan base here at this forum. So it is worth considering. I like a nice room myself and enjoy lots of options for dinning which are included in my package...don't want to have to go to over locations for meals etc and from what I read many seem to do this who stay at the ABR, food or the rooms do not seem to be the best but the location can't be beat.

The Palladium is my favorite....love the resort and can't stop myself from returning over and over. We love everything about it so much to offer and as you asked, it does not matter if you are a couple, a family or friends there is something for everyone. It is a huge resort complex so again lots of variety and places to walk and enjoy. As far as kids go, there are a number of adult areas...pool areas that you can enjoy...can't say the adults don't act like kids at some of them but they are adult. We have not found the kids to be an issue at all at the resort....there are families but there is so much space you can always find places that work for you there.. We like the beach so much and the pools are fantastic also. The rooms are very nice. I personally love the rooms in the white sands section the best, love the jr suites which are large and spacious and the bathroom for two ladies....loads of room for you both! You mentioned food being important and there is alot of that at the Palladium...lots of options for dinning and best thing is no reservations so you can eat where you like, a real plus as many of the all inclusives allow you only so many dinners in the al la carte restaurants and the rest of your meals need to be at the buffet. At the Palladium you can eat at a different al la carte each night or return more than once to a favorite. We enjoyed the food very much, of course personal taste plays a part in this but we had no complaints at all and really enjoyed our meals each day. Lots of option for the evenings here, with shows, piano bar, different musical groups and musicians in different lobbies....so much to enjoy and you can even go from lobby to lobby to enjoy more than one thing in an evening if you want. There is a disco if that suits you and a white party each week and the BBQ on the beach on Fridays which many enjoy.

I believe based on your information you should have a look at the Palladium...it seems to fit with your needs very well.

Someone else mentioned the Grand Sirenis...this is a great little resort. It is smaller and right next to the Palladium. It has great rooms and food is average but good and the service we found was fantastic. It is generally a good price also and I would not hesitate to consider it either. This resort can be very quiet though and not much for night life if this is important....we enjoyed the quiet but I know some have been disappointed with that aspect of this resort. The area near Akumal is just such a great place to be in that any of these resorts would be worth putting on your list of options. Enjoy your search..that is half the fun. If I can be of any other help with what I have shared, feel free to private message me.
