Just wondering if anyone knows what the rules are pertaining to bringing prescriptions including morphine. My son has back Injury and is on all sorts of meds. He keeps them in the tablet containers for each day. Will this be an issue or what does he need so they are not confiscated?

Thanks for any tips!

If it was me, I would take them in the prescription bottle rather than the daily containers. That way there is no question of whether they are prescribed.

Definitely the prescription bottles, esp for morphine.  Having said that I have never had my prescriptions checked.  It would be terrible to have the drugs he requires confiscated, better safe than sorry.

A heads up regarding humidity though - I keep my pills in the prescription bottle and ziplock bag and only put a few days at a time in the containers because I could see visible changes in some of my pills within a few days.

My husband brings all his prescription meds with him - in their packaging, in his checked luggage, and he's never ever had a problem. I wouldn't even hesitate to bring them.

I put mine in my carryon, with original labels. I'm just not willing to take a chance that they won't arrive with me.

I would also bring along copies of the prescription. Especially if something happened to them they could be replaced.

The only daily thing that I would use is that special daily thing the drug stores does, but I believe each day is sealed, with name and info like any bottle.

I have never, ever taken the bottles, domestic or international. Never been questioned. My Mom takes over 20 different meds, and for vacation last year I took her meds in 2 of those weekly pill holders.

Now, if you took 10 bottles of the same thing, you might get questioned.

Hi Midnight, I googled the question.  I found quite a few sites but here is one that offers advice.
http://www.mexperience.com/guide/essentials/mexico-entry-requirements.php

Bringing Prescription Drugs to Mexico
You are allowed to bring prescription drugs into Mexico provided that you have the accompanying documentation which proves a medical need. If you or a member of your family are taking prescription drugs, be sure to take the prescription/doctor's note with you, which includes the patient's name and the name of the medication(s) to prove medical need of the drugs you are carrying in case your luggage gets inspected.

I agree with many people, I have never been asked to prove my medications and always keep them in the original bottle.

In this case the consequences are pretty high, so I think you might want to play it by the book.

Have a great trip.

I also have always just brought my meds in the 7 day pill box with the exception of a gel, which I kept in the original box. I also carry multiple epi-pens not in the box and have never had an incident.

I, too, have never had a problem bringing prescription meds into Mexico. Agree with those that suggest bringing it in the original bottle with patients name on it though!

We had to take a month's worth of meds in Jan/Feb. Oxy, morphine, percocet. no problems. We take prescription bottles but my wife always carries them with her. If they are lost in your luggage you are out of luck. Be advised that none of those drugs are sold/prescribed in Mexico. The only way to get morphine is in a hospital. We went and interviewed a doctor in Tulum about meds as we are contemplating a move down there. Everything would have to come from the US.
With the new regs requiring a doctors visit every six months to obtain opiates in the US, moving there would require that we come back every six months. As a result my wife has been reducing her meds over the last six months by 80%. She hopes to be done with them in a few months.

We just lost a close and dear Mexican friend from Holbox who was prescribed huge doses of ibuprofin (the strongest pain reliever available). They deteriated his liver and he died a few weeks ago. The meds were prescribed for severe back pain. Many Mexicans don't like going to a doctor, they seem to think a chiropractor can cure anything. It's a shame.
RIP my good friend, Fernando.

We caught the fish with hand lines, no rods or reels. This was staged later.

I concur, especially if they are narcotics. Carry on bags only.

Don't worry about the meds. I would put them in my carry on luggage so they don't get acidentally lost in the US. You will not find any good pain medication in Mexico. The best you can hope to get is Tylex CD which is like a Tylenol #3 and expensive. It does require a prescription.

I have been traveling to Mexico for 32 years and during the last 10 years I need to bring some medication with me. I have never been questioned about any thing I bring down even though 180 of 10/325 Narco would be supect in the states. I have had popcorn taken from me but don't worry about your prescription drugs.

Keep them close in the carry on . The medications must be in original packaging in order to return to the States and Canada as well as entering Mexico . Thousands of people travel both ways without original containers but they could have excess or all meds seized by a wife left/dog died kind of border gaurd on a bad day , worst case scenario . Our " local " American border gaurd asks about prescription drugs every time we cross the border . It's a lot of trouble and space to carry original containers but that is the only sure way of having no problems .

My DW was stopped by Mexican Customs because of her two epi-pens showing up on the x-ray. Once they saw that they were epi-pens and in marked packages, they were OK with it. And, the last time in, even after we got the green light, we were stopped and they searched one of our bags -- immediately after we walked past the green light check point -- no reason other than "special inspection" and wanted to know if we were brining in food. Pawed through the top layer of the bag and then said we could go. Strange ! But, most of her prescription drugs were in that bag. So, maybe that was the real reason? All of our prescription and over-the-counter drugs are kept in their original bottles. Never a problem with that method (so far).
