Can anyone give me advice on cell phone usage? I will need to stay in touch with home while im away......My carrier said I could text without any additional charges because i have unlimited text but calls will be 99 cents a minute.... I am just wondering if they knew what they were talking about because that just didn't sound right about the text....... Does anyone have any experience with buying a prepaid phone just for temporary use down there and if so which carrier? I know Verizon had great coverage on Isla Mujeres.

No answer on the prepaid cell question, but, at least for AT&T we purchase the Mexico plan, gives us unlimited calls to and from home for $5 a month. We're on the family plan, so, any phone in our family group is included. You can also bring a laptop or tablet and connect to skype through the wifi either at Lol ha or in the lobby at ABR, skype is free.

We did that - bought a "go phone" from AT&T. Well actually bought the phone at Walgreens for 7.99 and then bought $15 or $20 worth of minutes at the AT&T store. Worked just fine down in Mexico. Just remember that you have to dial 001 first then the area code and number you wish to reach. Took me a few times to actually get through I didn't text - just called.

We're on Verizon and the texts are free (if you have unlimited texting) while we are in Mexico. We didn't call at all. Just texted the girls and they relayed to their grandma that all was ok. We also have a business and there were problems while we were away. Was able to get everything resolved just texting. No increases to our normal cell bill at all.

I read Tanda's post about Verizon texting being free if you have unlimited texting, but still felt uncertain due to other posts regarding Verizon. I am going down there tomorrow with my kids and the ex wants them to text her every day. So I just called Verizon and they said if you have unlimited texting, it is .50 for each text sent, .05 for each one received.

BUT... if you have a smart phone, you MUST turn off the internet before texting (or else you get slammed with charges - call Verizon for details). To do this on most smart phones, go to settings, wireless & networks, mobil networks - turn off here.

Hopefully this is the most accurate info; as I said, I just talked with them.

My bad. I just called them too, and they told me the same thing (.05 to receive, .50 to send). I did call Verizon before we left on that trip though, and they assured me that we were good. We did text a lot while we were down there, and I don't recall my bill being any higher, and I do remember checking. I did change my plan after that though. I had been on a corporate plan that was offered to the employees of the company I was working for, but I no longer work for them. I have no idea if that made the difference, but I'm very sorry that I passed on inaccurate information.

DH & I discovered something useful in Russia. If your phone has internet access, disable the "data" feature & use wifi, then you can use Skype or Google phone or Facetime to make phone to phone calls. We used skype & it was 2.3 cents US per minute. We could check VM & call folks. We did a $10 plan where we use it till it gets to under $2, I think, then they re-up it for another $10. We didn't use that the whole time we were in Russia! So easy & cheap too!

If you don't have internet on your phone, then obviously this won't help, but thought it might help someone!!
