I don't know any spanish and am afraid to try and say the words and mispronounce them so badly any suggestions? Can I just copy a few words and point to them? Thanks you in advance!

You aren't alone, most of us except for the lucky few who are bi-lingual struggle with Spanish. Don't worry there are plenty of English speakers in the Riviera Maya and you won't have a problem being understood. The Mexicans are usually very happy to try to teach you some Spanish. If you want to learn a little just say "Como se dice en Espanole" (How do you say in Spanish) and the English word (or just point at something) you want to learn in Spanish. For instance you might say (with pronunciation like it sounds) Como say deesay Beer in Espanyol. And they would answer "Cerveza" Try it It's fun. If they laugh just laugh back. They won't bite you.

As a rule, Mexican waiters love to help you learn Spanish. Some can even teach you a little Mayan.

A few years ago we traveled to Taiwan, and we were in a city and resort were 99% of the people did not speak any english except for "San fransico" and "Vancouver". We managed very well, we did a lot of pointing and cherades. We were able to order food rent scooters, travel on a bus and rent rooms without one word of english, and no we do not speak Mandarin.
So just relax and learn the following words "Gracias, tres Cuba libre, deus cerveso, Bano por favour, peso, and vino tinto po favour.

You will have no issues and as Whale put it " it will be fun".

Our Spanish epitomizes the word "limited" lol We have been to Mexico numerous times and I cannot ever remember one time that we ran into a language barrier. Just learn the basic Hello, How are you etc ..(possibly where are the bathrooms) and you will be good to go. I am kind of excited to see how my daughter does on our trip in June as she studied Spanish for 6 years in school..this will be interesting to see if she learned anything! :)
Relax and enjoy your vacation! All will be well.

Most are ecstatic that I can share a simple conversation without using English. They know that I am not fluent and may stubble here and there, but I come away from every visit more confident in my abilities. Often I will learn some new slang/phrases and the context to use them in and when I use them with locals, they laugh and smille. They are impressed

Here is a website to help you on your way. Very basic words and enunciation. You can't learn to walk without falling down.

I travel with a friend who is extremely fluent in Spanish (she was an ESL teacher) and I am not very fluent. One of the first things I learned to say is: My Spanish is very bad, but after tequila, it is better. With that simple phrase, I can indicate that I will be mauling the Spanish language, but everywhere we have been in Mexico, they really appreciate the effort. I also learned the courtesy phrases for please, thank you, I'm sorry, excuse me, do you speak English, etc. Courtesy, a sense of humor and an honest effort will get you a long way in most foreign countries.

I had 3 years of high school Spanish a LONG time ago, and my husband and I both had a couple of semesters in college (also quite a few years ago)! We bumbled our way through a few phrases, got very good at "donde esta el bano?" (where is the bathroom), "por favor" (please), "gracias" (thank you), "cuanto cuesto?" (how much) and "cerveza con limon" (beer with lime), and had a great time in the RM last month. They will smile, encourage you, teach you if you want, and appreciate the effort you are making! Have fun with it!

When we started traveling I didn’t know a word of Spanish. One day DW surprised me with a trip south. In the two weeks preceding the trip the gang at work had me fully prepared, all I learned was “Dos cervezas, por favor”. It is amazing how fast you learn the word baño after 6 beer! Thank God they all speak job English

Enjoy
Robbie

I suggest:

- Spanish music with lyrics (ask boyfriend for translations)
- free Spanish courses online
- spanish movies with english subtitles and other way around
- maybe 1 or 2 full home study courses.

Good luck!

I use a handy app on my smart phone called Spanish Lite (the free version). It will translate words and also say them for you.

That sounds like a great app to add to my phone for the words that I can't remember, especially after a cerveza or two. Haven't had Spanish since high school, so many words are a little difficult to recuerdo!

Do you need internet access to use that app when in ROO ?

I just downloaded an English to Spanish (and vice versa) app on my Android from Lonely Planet. It was $4.99 but works offline so you don't need to use data or WIFI. You have to pay for the app and then download a free but rather large (200+ MB) database file. I've been testing it out today and it works really well as far as I can tell. You can use voice input or type and then it translates it and uses a voice synthesizer to read it out loud.

I got a lot of mileage out of checking the public library for learn to speak spanish disks... I would listen to them in the car on the way to work. I was able to communicate pretty well. After a dinner off campus, my wife and I got into a cab to return to the resort. Like most cab drivers he had music going in his cab. My wife commented that she like the music he was playing. I said to him "senor, mi esposa legusta tu musica", in English he replied.... "its Eddie Van Halen"

Yes. You have to have some sort of data package on your phone, otherwise it won't be able to access the translation. I use it here in Texas as well, because there are a few restaurants here that use about as much English as they do in Tulum. The freeware restriction is you can only perform 10 translations per day. The Pro version is unlimitied.

Here's an interesting article: My Spanish self: How learning a new language has expanded more than my vocabulary

I have to agree with the author. It is fun to use whatever vocabulary I happen to remember at the moment to make my point.

Now I didn't even think about the fact that I would have to use my data plan in Mexico to use this app! Thanks for the lightbulb moment!

It has been fun to play with here in the US though...
