well i think my elk rifle would scare the neighbors
half to death. i'm thinking lp gas in the hole, but the
ignition has not been worked out. too much gas and
well , didn't need the lawn anyway.

Better alert home land security before you strike the match.
BTW - we used a 22. Dad locked up the big stuff haha.

Animal abusers!

What is a pocket gopher? Chipmonk? Mole or vole?

My cats take care of the rodents on my property.

Fits in your pocket I guess. Gophers are gophers where I come from only sometimes we call em prairie gophers.
Distructive little beggars.

We call 'em pocket gophers. Nasty little things, they can really wreck a yard! We had quite a few when we first built, we used one of those spring-loaded things that you put over their run and when they go thru it senses them and whaps down on top of them (not sure exactly how it works...) But they're dead after that. We've also used poison pellets and poison corn, put down in the holes I guess. And I know hubby live-trapped a couple - they're actually kind of cute in a rodent sort of way. I have no idea what he did with it after he trapped it, I don't want to know. We live-trap rabbits and take them to a state park not too far from us, they're cute, too.

We've got worse problem than gophers - "free range" cats.

The local feral cats and their domestic cousins that some of my idiot neighbors let run free consider my vegetable garden as their personal toilet.  The cayenne pepper and coffee grounds trick works for a little while, but I don't want to be digging in THAT either!!!

Live trapping is legal here and animal services will come and pick up your catch, but that won't exactly get me invited to the next neighborhood BBQ.

Any suggestions besides declaring all-out, "survival of the baddest" war?  I mean, my dogs have to obey leash laws but the local cat population is free to roam and totally out of control.

BB mi amiga, I know you are a "cat-lady-in-training"  but I put too much love and sweat in my garden to have them contnually ruin it. The new seed beds are already a public feline latrine.

The Free Cats - Catch 'Em and Keep 'Em signs I post around here just aren't working.  Even WITH the included cookbook...

Pocket gophers are hardly ever above ground, so I'm not sure how one would shoot them.
I've got the same problem, and these gophers must be the size of a dog because the trenches in the yard are raised up nearly a foot.
The traps are the only method I know of to get rid of them, but I can't seem to get any with mine.

Sandipants is right about those traps... I think we have one in the garage we're gonna have to bring out this year as those dang buggers are messing up our lawn again this year, and WORSE is Charlie digs when he finds a fresh hole!!!

Here's a link I found:

pocket gophers are gophers, smaller by 1/2 in size.
they literally have pockets on each side of their cute
little mouths to store food grass mostly. don't let the cuteness fool you, they tunnel just
below the surface every which direction. step in one you could
brake an ankle. not to mention attacking the garden.
i researched trapping but can't figure out how to get a 6"
trap in a 2" hole and where is the main chamber. i'd tell you
how i have captured them but i don't want to get flamed for
being cruel and it is cruel. haveing a nice lawn in a mountain
setting is not easy so i need to protect what little i have.

mm as long as your done target practicing towards PM.
bring some extra black powder and do you have any skinny
midgets for good ground penetration, we need precision, not
scorced earth bombardment.

What about the 'ol garden hose trick?
Or does that just leave you with a swampy yard and a flooded basement?

Snow

yep snow tried that, couldn't belive i had that
many holes in the yard. tied to find enough rocks
to plug the holes to back up the water, might as well
have a rock yard.
the mower might not like that though.

From reading, the gophers have a plug in every tunnel to prevent just that-the flooding water from a hose or hurricane. The damn things got their engineering degrees from MIT and they've outsmarted me for the past month. One more week and I'm goin Carl Spackler on their ass. I can always put down sod afterwards.
