ORIGINAL: Tortuga Tom I want to offer my deeply heartfelt thanks to Turdle and Hallin' for the work they've been doing with the turtles on HMB after the Ernesto surge damage. I've heard about all that you have done/are doing. You are wonderful people. Thank you Thank you Thank you. If we ever cross paths dinner and all drinks are on me and I will not take no for an answer. Guillermo too! Thanks, Tom ... but Halln and I have only been doing a fraction of the work compared to Guillermo! That man is truly dedicated to the turtles here on HMB He meticulously photographed each nest marker prior to the hurricane so that we could place the markers back again after the surge. They may only be approximate locations but at least it narrows it down a bit for watching for hatchlings. And the beach sure looked naked without the signs. It was a collaborative effort on August 9th (Halln's Bday) to replace the nest markers. With Guillermo's fotos on Halln's iPad, along with a map that I had drawn and notes of nest numbers and dates from another homeowner, I think we did a pretty good job. Welcome to the board, GVCam (Guillermo), and thanks for the report on CNN. After being out here hands-on with the turtles, I can attest to the fact that the "wish list" items in the report are much needed. If there is anyone out there that has access and can donate these things, it would be tremendously appreciated. There is no better remedy for the post-Ernesto grief than to see the mommas coming ashore once again to nest and watching the babies scramble to the water. TT, If your ticker is correct then our paths should cross...we are here for 13 more days! Can't wait for you and Guillermo to meet...I told him you would be taking over where we leave off. Let's all get together and toast to the turtles!

On 8/15/12 at HMB from 9pm to 10pm 5 green turtles came on shore but none nested sucessfully, from 10pm to 1:30am two greens and one loggerhead nested sucessfully. I am sure more came on shore after 1:30am but I was beat from the last 3 nights at Akumal bay. On 8/14/12 between Turtle Bay and Akumal Bay just over 20 turtles came on shore and I had 2 out of 4 nest sucessfully at Akumal Bay, I am not sure how many nested sucessfully at Turtle Bay last I heard was about 5. We continue having a great season with the expectation that many more nest will be hatching soon. We are in need of volunteers.

I would like to get a couple of the turtle lights you posted Tom, is it possible for you to bring them on your trip? I dont like ordering anything to a Mexico address unless it is by special shipping. I wll reimburse you when you get here if this can be done. Thank you!

For those who did not see the new CEA Newsletter, here is the official word of the Ernesto damage. Hurricane Ernesto: Sea Turtle Program Report by Mariano Suárez Unfortunately, on Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th of August, the Mexican Caribbean was hit by Hurricane Ernesto. Although it was a Category 1 storm, it made landfall with great strength and, as its waves pounded Akumal's beaches, it brought negative consequences. The 2012 nesting season has been more than successful. As of Monday, August 6, we had registered 585 green and loggerhead turtle nests in Akumal beaches, with a total of 9,000 hatchlings released. The previous record had been in 2010 with a total of 406 nests for both species. With the unavoidable arrival of Ernesto, we worked to relocate the nests that were too close to the sea, and collected hatchlings that were ready, in order to release them after the natural disaster. We also made sure the nest markers were firmly stuck in the sand and we counted the nests once more. This phenomenon surprised us with its intensity and the tide rose quite high in Akumal's four bays. The strong waves eroded much of the beach. The day after the storm, we inspected the beaches and, sadly, the results are not favorable. All but 80 nest markers were washed away. We estimate that about 20–25% of the remaining nests were washed away or destroyed by the high tides. One day after the hurricane, turtles began to come to shore again to nest—reminding us of the continuity of life in this beautiful Caribbean area. Now a new season begins. It is difficult to locate all the nests that remain on the beach. We kindly ask everyone to be alert for possible hatchlings and, in case any are spotted, report them to us immediately. Contact tortugas1@ceakumal.org, cell 984-157-6318, CEA office 984-875-9095. We will resurvey the beaches in the coming days and mark any nests we find in order to have better control of the protection on the beach. We are researching ways to improve marking and mapping practices. In the two months remaining in nesting season, we want to avoid covering any nests or having turtles dig up pre-existing nests as they lay their eggs. We also ask you to limit placing chairs or other things on the beach since they could be on top of an unmarked nest. We were witnesses to nature's strength and, while we are saddened by the situation, we are inspired by the example of this tenacious species and will continue to work to protect these amazing creatures. We can expect that there will be many more nests in the remaining months. I thank the people who voluntarily help this noble and gratifying job, which is to preserve the sea turtles. Ernesto Brought No Major Damage Hurricane Ernesto hit Quintana Roo on the night of August 7, and its effects continued the next day. Akumal received it only as a tropical storm and had no major loss or damage, except for the sad loss of turtle nests and hatchlings, and erosion on some beaches. The lifeguard tower fell but we were able to pull it back up into place. The bay zoning map was destroyed and we are working on replacing it soon. We also temporarily lost a red buoy in the bay but we located it to put it back in its place as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone who thought of us and the turtles in Akumal. No storm can kill our passion for our work!

I'm confused? Sorry about that Tom, the area is actually Jade and south Akumal I assumed it was Turtle bay since we call it Tortuga Bahia in the nesting report, my bad. I dont really work that area so I am just getting to know it well.
