That's pretty awesome Tom. Do we have any statistics showing percentage of nests created by month?

I would imagine Mariano has that in his records. I'll ask him if he has it broken down that way. His netbook was stolen early in the season so this may be on an office hard drive.

Sad turtle news.

It's no wonder about the amount of nests on HMB this summer.

CC- Thankfully this disgusting harassment doesn't affect the nesting process. The resident turtles in the bays are juveniles, years away from maturity. The nesting mommas are coming back to lay after traveling thousands of miles in most cases. They are drawn back to the beach of their birth by some internal compass imprinted in them when they make their initial scramble to the sea after hatching. This is why it's so important to never release hatchlings directly into the sea, they need to get their imprint from the sand so they can return in 20-25 years to lay their eggs.

If anything, this constant intrusion by stupid humans could conceivably drive the juveniles to find other feeding grounds.
Akumal would no longer be the "Place of Turtles" as far as being able to snorkel with them any more. That would be a terrible loss to all of us who love this place so much.

To add to the previous post......

It is my opinion that the increase in the number of nests in the area is in no small part due to the conservation efforts having a long term effect. More hatchlings are making it to the sea instead of in predators bellies. Nests that hatch in daylight are not easy pickings any more, they're being released at night. Nests are no longer being poached for their eggs as a food. Neither are the turtles themselves. Semarnat, CEA, YEF, etc. are having an effect. All of those extra surviving babies are maturing and coming home to nest. If I'm right this trend should continue for years to come. We can only wait and hope...

Doug- Mariano told me he would compile the numbers and send them to me next week. I'm guessing he wants to wait until the end of July for complete numbers .

This nest from last night oughta help the numbers!

This green turtle started 3 holes before returning to the first hole to complete her digging and lay her eggs. Watched her (and saved her from various obstacles on the beach) for three hours. No wonder she felt such an urgency to finish her job...that's a lot of eggs!

Fantastic shot, Turdle! And you did this with your regular camera, flash off, with the red flashlight for photo illumination, right?

Right! I rest my elbow on the sand to act as a "tripod" to keep the camera steady and press the button very gently...oh, and holding my breath helps too.

This is fantastic!!! I hope we are lucky enough to see this in a few weeks ... or at least some hatching

just curious, does the storm/hurricane blowing through there now cause any problems with the nests???

Turdle- That is a great photo! Nice.

J and K - Any nests close to the high tide level could be affected. If they feel that any will be in danger, CEA will dig up the eggs and relocate them to a safe area. A lot of hard work ahead for them if this is the case.

I saw CEA on the webcam headed down the beach with buckets, shovels, and bags. Its gonna be a long night.

The storm surge is greater than expected as recently as this morning. Nests are being lost.

They simply do not have enough bodies to deal with this in such a short time.

Tom, they have two large fenced in areas at the Grand Palladium (even installed netting above to keep the birds out) but it's very close to the high tide line and now is likely under water. Is there any chance that the fencing could help save the eggs or will they take too much of a beating to survive?

this truly is horrible timing for this storm

the report from the palladium said their people counted 431 nests from palladium north through the sanctuary to the southern tip of the el dorado

Lee- I saw the pics of that new enclosure, it's good to see them getting proactive on that busy beach.

If this storm moves thru quickly a good amount of them may survive. It really depends on how saturated they get and if any are completely washed away. Sand piled on top of the nests can make it difficult for the babies to dig themselves out, netss left with a thin covering are susceptible to predators. It's totally dependent upon just what the storm does and for how long.

They did a wonderful job there...the management staff is well directed by customers in the know and they take advice very well....the enclosures were awesome and once nesting wsa complete they built netting over top to protect the nests from birds....trouble is, the entire enclosure sits just about 30 feet from the high tide mark, which during a storm surge like this one I've been told was way under water....I do know that they had a crew keeping an eye on things and trying to do as much as they could...the management staff at GP is one of the best of the several dozen resorts I've been to in that area and that's why we keep going back there....I'll really be curious to find out how things went. Actually I would have loved to have been down there through this to have helped out. It wasn't bad in that area but the storm surge was pretty significant. I've rode out several hurricanes in my life in northeast north carolina and in Virginia Beach and the surge is usually the part that does the most damage in these lesser degree storms

keep me informed.....you rock

That is muy triste. However, I hope many, many more survived. I guess I am glad I am not there for once to see that in person.
