A little turtle video from last night -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9H4hYdZl2A

PLEASE - if you are interested in seeing turtles, stick with the CEA. The turtles will thank you for it.

The stupidity continues.
I left my comments. Where was this?

Breaks my heart to see her struggling to find an escape route. You could just feel her panic. What is wrong with people?

There is a lot of great info on the new CEA update including this awesome news.....

So far, we have 148 loggerhead nests and 153 green turtle nests.

We've also released 1,302 baby loggerheads.

So any idea on average how many nests are due to hatch mid to end of August?

As of mid-June there were 73 loggerhead and 5 green turtle nests, as reported in the CEA newsletter, so some of those will be hatching around mid-August. Others laid before the end of June will hatch by the end of August. There will be continued nesting during August so you are coming at a good time to catch turtle action.

As Alex said, you are coming at a good time, there should be a LOT of activity. In the past I have found late August to be an extremely busy time for the turtles. If you're willing to put in the late night beach time you should be rewarded handsomely.

Alex- It is sooo nice to have you checking in here and answering these questions, I sometimes don't get here for a couple of days. Thank you so much for the help educating those that are interested. I'm looking forward to seeing you soon. Hold down the fort 'til I get there!

Glad I can help. You're not excited about coming down, are you?
It'll be great to see you. We can drink to the health of the turtles, on a night when you're not going on turtle patrol.

Me? Excited? Naahhh..........

Are you kidding??? 300 nests already.....I'm jumping out of my skin to get down there!!! Flying eggs, tourists bugging the mommas, I wish I could hop a plane right now to help out. Mariano must be exhausted already!

A quiet night drinking to the turtles sounds great. Does Cueva still give the best discount?

Yep, stick with me, baby, for a good discount, unless we get stuck with other tables' tabs. Can't guarantee a "quiet" night at Cueva.

I'll stick with you anytime and any night at Cueva is a good night.

Here is another good video from a few nights ago. It is of a green turtle landing - a very rare event to see. Sorry for the graininess as this was taken from far away with digital night vision binoculars ( otherwise she would have never come in ). A little long at ~5min, but it takes time for the turtle to check out and feel safe with a spot on the beach, and I thought it was worth keeping uncut. This is a good example of why you should walk at the top of the beach when traveling during turtle nesting season. This is when the turtle is the most cautious.

This year I am using a pulsar recon 550R digital night vision unit. It has an integrated recorder and 5x zoom.

Thank you so much for pointing this out! Just don't tread on any nests up there.

Animooshe and I are here at ABR until Saturday. Nests all over the place from in front of the pool and over to building 6 but especially in the second palapa on the far side of the buffet in front of building 6. For some reason that spot is very popular with the turtles. Havent been lucky enough to see any mommas come in though...kinda hard to stay awake at night when those bleeping ricky birds are waking us up at 5:30 every morning!

Maybe we will be lucky enough to see one nest tonight ... would be very special today as it is Animooshes birthday!

Love the videos. So, do the mama's typically wait that long to come out of the water? Is it like a rest break before the long haul up the beach?

I'm going to leave this one for Tom to answer. He's had much more up-close-and-personal experience than I have.

Every turtle is different. This one was obviously being very cautious. Others will just come right up on to the beach without hesitation. Once they get on the beach the differences continue, some take frequent breaks, some take one or two, and some just bull right up the beach and get to work. In my experience it seems the loggerheads are more prone to just go for it and the greens take more breaks. I really hope you get to witness this, it's breath-taking.

Was in the right place at the right time last night ... CEA uncovered a nest of hatchlings. Between 80 to 100 tortugitas in total. Then brought them all further down the beach at ABR to let them find their way to the ocean.

Looking forward to seeing more in September!!
