Tom, while we were at Grand Sirenis we found a secluded "turtle beach" full of nesting sites with empty shells. It was amazing...isolated and empty of any tourists and with so many nest holes I couldn't count them all. We spent a morning there, left at noon, and went back at 5 pm. Low and behold we found adult turtle tracks coming from the ocean straight up to the back of the beach and then back down to the ocean about 5' over from the first set of tracks. We are not sure if she nested...it would have been daylight . And it was November 1st ! Is it possible she nested during the day? Do they ever come up that far on the beach for any other reason? I marked it and reported it to the concierge who called security. Apparently the head of security is in charge of monitoring turtle activity and all the building concierges are educated in what to do with baby turtles. I never heard back from them and my marker was still there when we left but no other markers. I'll add photos asap.

fidget- Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this, forgot all about it.

The response I got was that she may have been simply coming out to sun herself for a while since it has been cool there, she may have been sick and came up to rest, or she may have been trying to nest though that is the least likely scenario.

CEA would like to expand into the Grand Sirenis area one day when funding and staffing allows.

One important tip, after handling a baby turtle, do not touch your face or mouth, or handle food or drink, not even containers or silverware, until you have thoroughly washed your hands with soap and hot water. Turtles carry salmonella. One tourist forgot to do this and spent the next day suffering miserably in her hotel room.

Another reason no one should touch the baby turtles, as TeriA posted on the first page of this thread. CEA turtle staff usually wear gloves when they need to handle them.

I know you're kidding, but in case someone else doesn't, and in the interest of further education ... please note that CEA staff have a federal permit allowing them to handle turtles. Others, without permits, should not be handling turtles, with or without gloves.

And here is visual evidence of that, we're all putting surgical gloves on before starting a nest that's about to hatch. Standard procedure for each and every nest.

Gloves everywhere!

I never knew it either Gato. Don't feel bad. Thanks for letting us know.

If no one is around and you have no gloves and they are headed the wrong way is it ok to briefly re-direct them without gloves? We did that in the past when one was headed into the condo.......

Yes it is. Just gently pick them up by the sides of the shell with your fingertips and give them a little turn in the right direction. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly before touching anything else!
