ORIGINAL: DougSR And we just signed Roy Oswalt. http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2012/05/rangers-sign-oswalt.html Hopefully for the Rangers, it's a good move. Got to wonder though why he's been a free agent for 2 months. With what players are being paid these days, it surprises me no other team failed to claim him.

ORIGINAL: John in DC A losing record last year with two extended stints on the DL (back spasms) might have had something to do with it. I agree. He's a bit of a gamble in my book. His past reputation should help to put fans in the stands, which is what ownership wants, but that will fade if he doesn't produce.

He's been away from the game for quite a while. He threw for several other teams including the Dodgers but his friendship with Nolan won the day. He'll be going to the minors for maybe as long as a month plus he won't have to hit. When Neftali Feliz comes back from DL this will allow him to go back to the bullpen hopefully. We've got a solid rotation but you can never have enough decent arms down the stretch.

ORIGINAL: John in DC Oswalt to the pen, right? It would be crazy to make Feliz a reliever again. He's a starter, period. The Ranger mindset is that once Oswalt gets back to throwing in game situations, he will be able to take them deeper into games as a starter. Nefti never was able to accomplish more than 6 innings (I think) and those long distance outtings attributed to his breakdown. If Oswalt can give us 4 or 5 wins towards the end of the season and have Nefti and Joe Nathan as late relievers that would be good. Our bullpen has been outstanding (with maybe last night as an exception). Like Frank keeps pointing out, this is a marathon, not a sprint so we'll need all of the depth we can get. So far pitching for Texas has been good with the exception of Feldman. We're currently 4th behind Wash, LA, and Pit. 1st in runs, batting average, slugging pct, 2nd in overall pct. Life is good for now.

ORIGINAL: John in DC I think by signing Oswalt, the Rangers did what they had to do, no more, no less. When you need an arm, you can't be too picky--not that they could have been. There just aren't ever a whole lot of starting pitchers available before the July trade deadline. quote:

Although there was the iffy Beltran foul ball, congrats to Santana. The Cards have been struggling lately. Just gotta remember, October is a long ways off. CC--Glad to see the White Sox take over 1st. John, hope the Nats stay up there. Sorry Doug, just don't like the Rangers.

Please pray for my Cardinals. They really could use some help. Watch the Astros sweep us this week

Rangers have been noticeably mediocre. We could have pooped out last night as Holland had a stomach bugged and somehow we survived the runs.

Good point John. Plus making a late season run, like the Cards did last year, sure makes for an exciting September!

Slight Hi-Jack but sports related! Pretty funny! Kyrie Irving (rookie of the year from Cleveland that played at Duke last year) is one of my new favorite players. They dress him up in movie make-up and make him look like an 80 year old man . Then he goes to the street basketball courts in new York and gets in a pick-up basketball game with all these young guys.. at the beginning playing terrible and then starts playing for real and it’s great. Those guys and the crowd had to be saying W T F! http://devour.com/video/uncle-drew/
