Hopefully for the Rangers, it's a good move.  Got to wonder though why he's been a free agent for 2 months. With what players are being paid these days, it surprises me no other team failed to claim him.

A losing record last year with two extended stints on the DL (back spasms) might have had something to do with it.

I agree.  He's a bit of a gamble in my book.  His past reputation should help to put fans in the stands, which is what ownership wants, but that will fade if he doesn't produce.

Cute Cubby story. 5 men and a goat

The interview.

Their website.

Funny thing is...Cubs are not allowing Wrigley the Goat on the field. Curses continue. LOL

He's been away from the game for quite a while. He threw for several other teams including the Dodgers but his friendship with Nolan won the day. He'll be going to the minors for maybe as long as a month plus he won't have to hit. When Neftali Feliz comes back from DL this will allow him to go back to the bullpen hopefully. We've got a solid rotation but you can never have enough decent arms down the stretch.

I think by signing Oswalt, the Rangers did what they had to do, no more, no less. When you need an arm, you can't be too picky--not that they could have been. There just aren't ever a whole lot of starting pitchers available before the July trade deadline.

Oswalt to the pen, right? It would be crazy to make Feliz a reliever again. He's a starter, period.

The Ranger mindset is that once Oswalt gets back to throwing in game situations, he will be able to take them deeper into games as a starter. Nefti never was able to accomplish more than 6 innings (I think) and those long distance outtings attributed to his breakdown. If Oswalt can give us 4 or 5 wins towards the end of the season and have Nefti and Joe Nathan as late relievers that would be good. Our bullpen has been outstanding (with maybe last night as an exception).

Like Frank keeps pointing out, this is a marathon, not a sprint so we'll need all of the depth we can get. So far pitching for Texas has been good with the exception of Feldman. We're currently 4th behind Wash, LA, and Pit. 1st in runs, batting average, slugging pct, 2nd in overall pct. Life is good for now.

Far be it from me to second-guess Nolan Ryan on the grooming of power pitchers, but ... Feliz has starter written all over him. There are a dozen guys just like him in bullpens all over the majors. Among starters, his stuff is pretty rare. That makes him a far more potent weapon for the Rangers.

If he can go six innings, he can learn to go seven, and that's all you really need out of a starter. He strikes me as someone who has gotten by on enormous talent alone. Somebody ought to teach him some mechanics.

I agree John.  They didn't want to see the Angels get him.  Figured they would gamble on him having a better year than last.

Who do you think has these stellar hitting stats?

.389 AVG / .421 OBP / .722 SLG

Nats ace Stephen Strasburg: 7 for 18 with three doubles and a dinger. Washington's pitching staff leads the National League in hitting, with a slash line of .198/.220/.302.

Start using him as a pinch hitter.

Congrats to Santana for getting the Mets their first no hitter in history. 5 walks 134 pitches...only 77 strikes, but I'm sure he'll take it.

Sox get their 9th in a row

Although there was the iffy Beltran foul ball, congrats to Santana.  The Cards have been struggling lately.  Just gotta remember, October is a long ways off.  CC--Glad to see the White Sox take over 1st.  John, hope the Nats stay up there.  Sorry Doug, just don't like the Rangers.

Well my Cards finally have caught a few breaks.  They finally won today and have the most picks in tonight's draft.  They have 5 0f the 60 picks tonight.  Thank God we need something to look forward to!

Watching last night's 7-6 Nats win over the Mets was like watching a Little League game featuring 18 very large players. Apparently nobody really wanted to win, but somebody had to, in 12 innings. The Nats heat-seeking missile, reliever Henry Rodriguez (MPH-Rod) unleashed a 9th-inning wild pitch that almost killed several fans in the $350 box seats.

Rangers have been noticeably mediocre. We could have pooped out last night as Holland had a stomach bugged and somehow we survived the runs.

It's a long season. Keep it in perspective. Every team is going to win a third of its games; every team is going to lose a third of its games. It's the remaining third that makes the difference between the best and the worst.

Good point John.  Plus making a late season run, like the Cards did last year, sure makes for an exciting September!

John--Nice article by Ken Rosenthal about Rookie Bryce Harper.  Nats seem to be building a great ballclub for the future.

Slight Hi-Jack but sports related!  Pretty funny!

Kyrie Irving

(rookie of the year from Cleveland that played at Duke last year) is one of my

new favorite players.  They dress him up in  movie make-up and make

him look like an 80 year old man . Then he goes to the street basketball

courts in new York and gets in a pick-up basketball game with all these young

guys..  at the beginning playing terrible and then starts playing for

real and it’s great.  Those guys and the crowd had to be saying W T F!

Tigers took 2 outta three for you. White Sox lost 2 of three to those lowly Astros.

Now we get to play your Cards Frank. Looking forward to it.

I'm afraid to say anything about any game right now, for fear of jinxing the Nationals. This is not a good state to be in, considering it's only June.
