Love to see it. Is it only Russia or are you going through any of the Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania? I'm Estonian, by the way.

We'll probably fly over them, but we will spend most of the time on Sakhalin Island. I'm thinking the water is too cold for snorkeling!
although, there is a bay on the West side of the island. After we're done on Sakhalin, then we go to Moscow for a few days. A couple days of business for the guys & a couple days of sightseeing with the guys.

What brings you to Sakahlin Island? Yes, that insulated dive suit would be good!

DH's work takes us there. Possible work for them, so they're going to check & see if it's for real. I told him he wasn't going that far away without me!!

Well, I've finally got a bit o' time to get this thing rolling!! DH needed to travel to Sakhalin Island for business, so I said "Not without me you don't!!" Or something to that effect!!

We left Denver May 7 & arrived in Washington-Dulles, then got on the biggest plane I've ever been on to fly to Moscow!!

I took this to show the plane. It was an Airbus 330-300. There were several NASA folks on this flight. The dude with the beard is one of them.

We flew over the tip of Greenland & right down the center - long ways- of Iceland, but it was dark so we didn't get to see anything.

It took 10 hrs +/- to fly from Wash/Dul to Moscow. My first view of Moscow!!

There is a ton of farmland around Moscow.

Yup, we aren't in Kansas anymore, Toto!!

We flew into Moscow DME airport, then took a 1 1/2 hour limo ride (courtesy of Mark's boss) to Moscow SVO airport where we had a 9 hour flight to Yuzhno, Sakhalin Island, Russia.

Looking back at Moscow DME airport. See ya in 11 days!!

The following are just a bunch of random building shots & scenery taken on the trip from DME to SVO! I kept taking pictures of the buildings to remind myself I was REALLY in Moscow!! I had not adjusted the time yet, so add 8 hours to the time show. These were around 11:30 AM-ish Moscow time.

We didn't see any single family homes around Moscow. We just may have not visited that part of the city, tho.

These looked like single family homes, but there were several entrances, so it looked like they maybe only had 4-6 homes per building.

MOSCOW!!!

We counted at least 5 nuke plants with 5-7 towers each in & close to the areas of Moscow we were in.

More nuke stacks

There were many large & beautiful parks in Moscow

There are several mosques in Moscow, but most structures, like this one, are Russian Orthodox buildings.

Shopping centers are all multilevel structures

I took this picture, thinking it was funny, not realizing how true it is! You have to be constantly aware of traffic because they will drive on the sidewalk & hit you!!

A beautiful building, abandoned

Memorial of some type

Yay!!! We made it to SVO, got our baggage checked & now we're trying to wake up!!! lol That's DH on the left & his boss on the right.

That's all today folks, got fire defense items to handle...
Позже (until later)

I love Bing translator!! Wish I could've had something while we were there. A lot of the folks we were with didn't speak English!

So Cool. A girl I work with is engaged to a Russian. He's been in Canada since he's been 5 or 6 but his parents are as Russian as they come. She's got some great stories.

Keep the pictures coming!

Did you happen to drive past the big anti-tank barrier btwn airport and downtown? Shows how incredibly close the Germans got in WWII...

it wasn't bad at all, really! We had friends that gave us some great advice, plus I believe there was a thread about long distance flights here on LG that had some helpful things too. 1. We kept hydrated. 2. we wore our compression socks. and 3. We started "living" in the time zone of our destination during travel. We took Benadryl to sleep when we would be sleeping in Yuzhno & did our best to eat on their schedule too. When we got there it only took 1 night's sleep & we felt great the next day!

Coming back, I repeated that (we were 17 time zones from Colorado) & felt great. DH did not & paid for it for about 4 days after we got home! He had a really cool app on his phone so we knew what time it was in Denver, DC(our stop in the US), Moscow & Yuzhno just with the press of a button!

From the time we walked out the door at home on May 7 at 6AM MDT, till we walked into our hotel in Yuzhno on May 9 at 4PM Yuzhno time it had been 38 hours of travel & we didn't feel too bad!!

Oh how we wish we would've know what those were!! We SAW them, but thought they were canals!! I asked DH (& he remembers this) where on earth the water came for those canals??? It just didn't make sense!! I'm glad you mentioned them, but wished I'd have know so I could taken pictures!! Guess I should've done more history research.

what i find interesting is that most of the buildings are no differant
than our own here in the US. seems odd we appear to be the same .
yet think differant. hummmmmm.
