Have seen many snorkelers wearing short wider fins. Besides the fact they are travel friendly are there any benefits to this style. Also have seen split fins...anyone use them? What are the benefits.

I use standard diving fins. Would be good to know if these other types lessen the risk of leg cramps.

Crunch uses the shorter fins. I just switched to split and HOLY COW! I feel like a dolphin now! The difference is incredible. Less effort. More speed. I can go farther, faster with less energy. I paid $90.

I'm no expert, so take my response with a grain of salt ...

I don't think there is an advantage (in the water) to the shorter wider fins.

I think the split fins are better for diving.

Yes....they look FAB!

I used to drag around those heavy rubber diving fins too, but I love my new shorties.  They are lightweight and give good propulsion.  A word of caution...take out the plastic insert before donning them!  :)

I just got these Cressi short fins after our trip in Nov.

I will put them through a rigorous testing program as soon as the pool warms up in April. I rented the Cressi long fins from the dive shop next to Lol Ha and that's why I bought these.

The rubber around the foot is so plyable and comfortable, which is important for somebody like me with tailor's bunions on both feet. The US Diver fins I had bought were agonizing to wear, even for short, one-hour snorkel sessions.

While in Hawaii we saw the shorter fins and were told they were origianlly for surfers.........not sure if that is completely true.  However, I have both styles of longer fins and prefer the split fins.........for me they are more efficient.

Bought new gear yesterday, and the guy at the dive shop said the longer the flipper the more distance you get from each kick. If you are staying close to shore, and snorkeling in calm water shorties are fine. I bought the cressi pluma.

LOVE my short fins.  I believe they are actually swim fins and meant for swimmers.

The propulsion is just fine for my needs without all the drag and bulk of traditional fins.  I have gotten in a few nasty currents in teh open ocean in Cozumel and i thought they worked just fine. Super easy to put on and you can walk just fine in them.  Also, really great for packing.

I would never go back!

I love my shorty fins for Akumal Bay.  I had less worry about kicking coral and had plenty of zoom.  Now, when the water is rough or you need real power, you have to work harder. I'm not likely to be out that far as I'm a big baby.

As far as cramps, I did have issues until I loosened the heel strap a bit.    Guess I really didn't want to lose them.

I was still wishing I had your cool sling gadget.   Have a great time Schnauzie!

Darn those scales at the airport!!!  Maybe I'll wear a pair on.  :)
Shouldn't be tough to behave if I don't have any bad influences around.

Edit........forgot my halo:

If you're flying on a package, you can probably get away with taking a whole 'nother bag and calling it "scuba gear". Checked with the TA the other day and we're good for an extra 40 lbs as long as it's only snorkle gear. Good thing too - we just got 4' long fins - well, maybe not quite but they are gigantic. I had some shorties, which I liked for packing, but they wore all the skin off my feet. Same with Juan. We would have to tape our feet up to try to prevent blister. Now we have booties - yet another thing to pack - to fit the fins. Hopefully we will like these ones.

I love my split fins, much more propulsion with the same effort. That's a good thing when paddling out of a bad spot.

We love the short fins... all the reasons seagoat mentioned...  Mark just got a new pair in Akumal (his were  shot) & his are wider & shorter than mine & he loves them!

I have never had any leg cramps with mine!  You'll really like them, me thinks!  As seagoat mentioned, don't forget to take out the shape thingies, but keep them because it keeps the tops from getting out of shape in storage or while traveling!

I just got a new pair of shorties but my question is more about the booties. Never had a problem in the past with blisters but if I do with the new fins would a pair of plain cotton ankle socks work in place of booties?

Pretty ironic post...I just addressed this very question on "Other Topics Forums" today! We must be on the same way length today ha!

This all gets confusing. I bought short fins last year at the dive shop . Now I need to see what a split fin is. I'm not wild about the short fins I bought.

moon - they are medium in length - not as short as shorties, but not as long as the full size & they have a gap, a split, down the center.

I stand corrected, there are short split fins as well

My fins are the least of my weight problems! (No jokes please...) No, I'm referring to my wine box and my giant glass bottle of Cruzan dark rum which I can't seem to find anywhere in Mexico!
