We have travelled freely from Cancun to Playa del Carmen to Akumal to Tulum by car and felt very safe. We have also travelled twice to Cozumel driving everywhere to explore and snorkel. But I must tell you that 833 deaths at gunpoint per year is a disturbing statistic..I don"t care if it is one of the safest areas of Mexico or not it still equates to an average of 69 people killed each month!!! I checked our murder statistics in the metro area of MPLS/St. Paul and combined they equal roughly 70 murders a year!!! Sadly, I don"t think I would rent a car anymore in the Riviera Maya area. I think I may still feel safe to do so on Cozumel but it is a real shame that things have escalated to the extent of scaring away tourists. We have been to Grand Cayman the last few years and they too are seeing a rise in crime but I feel that their police dept is more reputable and are really addressing the problems unlike their Mexican counterparts that are always probing for a bribe and looking the other way. Just my two cents worth.

i am quite aware that Quintana Roo is a state but if you check the most recent census, they have a population of roughly 1.3 million people. The metro area of Minneapolis/ St, Paul is closing in on 2 million. So I was somewhat comparing the same size of poulation demographics and still believe 69 people killed at gunpoint a month is nothing to overlook especially when it appears that the state and local police force do not have a handle on it. I know a lot of people that travel to all-inclusives and maybe venture out of them once or twice on an organized tour. I thought they were missing out on experiencing the real Mexican culture but never said anything because to each their own. But now I have to admit, that if I return to this area again soon, I may join them in their secure vacation oasis because the risks of venturing out on my own may not be worth it anymore. I do believe the further south you go the less risk of a violent crime so maybe an idea would be to arrange private transportation down to your destination and rent a car down there for a few days to check out the area but when returning to Cancun jump back on the private transport wagon. jmho

This concern about the quoted murder rate on the map graphic got me thinking about how accurate it might be. FWIW I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate Apparently the accuracy of quoted murder rates varies and the criteria for classifying them. I don't have anything concrete to back this up but I suspect that if tourists visiting Q. Roo were being much affected by criminals it would be all over these forums, and it is not. And FWIW we delete very little here, mostly spam. I feel perfectly safe here in Q.Roo and I feel confident in saying that any garden variety tourist who vacations here has a virtually zero chance of being murdered or seriously threatened by anyone [except maybe timeshare salesmen...lol]. I wish they had numbers on how many tourists enter into Q.Roo yearly and compare that to how many return to their homes safely having thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Now there would be a statistic to post.
