I just drove up to the states from Xcalak. No problems on the trip and we went right up the road from Tampico to Reynosa. The military was a bit more active in that area. Most of the small villages along that stretch seemed to be deserted with lots of closed businesses including some Pemex gas stations. Went through a few check points but only a quick glance from them then waved through. What struck me is how much the Mexican people near the border are suffering from the situation.

Can someone tell me where the Sierra Madre Mountains are on that map? I did a bass fishing trip to lake Baccarac a couple years ago, and we had an armed police escort (two guys with AK47s in the back of a pick up) take us to our resort that was 3 hours from the airport. My guess is that we were in some pretty bad areas....Not so sure I'd do it again.

I have zero fear going to Akumal from Cancun.

Looks like this is where you were.

Which would have put you near Culica in Sinalo....which is marked dangerous now.

How was the fishing?

Craig the fishing was insane....7-8 lb bass don't even turn heads there. We had a group of 20 guys and all but two caught bass over 10 lbs. There is no lake anywhere in the world like that. But the small towns we drove through were pretty scary. Hence why the fishing lodge has an armed escort from Los Mochis airport. I've seen poverty all over the Caribbean, but nothing compares to what i saw in these small Mexican towns out in the middle of nowhere. From dead horses lying in the road to random fires everywhere....I could go on & on.....plain and simple it was a scary place.

My husband and i are leaving for mexico on saturday, flying into cancun renting a care driving to Akumul. We were there in 2005 and didn't have any problems with the drive to Akumul. Is this still the case?
Looking forward to a nice relaxing beach vacation.

According to this info, the main tourist areas in Mexico are deemed as safe. Those of us who visit the Roo know this but the media has painted a broad picture of Mexico as a high risk country to visit.

My mother-in-law worries herself to the nth degree when we are enjoying our time in the Roo. Even though I tell her that we are safer down there than she is in MSP, I can't convince her otherwise.

Just the map

Good info - I am pinning this to the top of the forum and making it an FAQ,

It's a little different, things such as the new bridge in PDC is now finished so you may get there faster, sorry. Other than that, for example, if driving from Denver to Colorado Springs, or Phoenix to Tucson scares you then the trip might be a nail biter. Things in the Roo are pretty quiet and sedate, just watch the other drivers both in front and behind you, take your time, relax and have a great trip. No worries.

I just read that Princess Cruise Lines are no longer stopping in Puerto Vallarta because of escalateing violence. What's gonna happen to Capt. Stubing, Gopher, Julie, Isaac, and Doc now?

Another great comparison. And Chicago is not even on the list. Thanks Sherry for sharing on FB

Just having returned from a fabulous return vist to Akumal and Isla Mujeres, it was the same friendly. inviting atmosphere, we have experienced in our dozen or so trips to the area. Sad that the Americans were spooked by the media.

Just an FYI, Senor Whiskers is my husband, Brian, who has finally been motivated to join boards and post rather than just reading the best posts that I've been sending him in email for the past 10 years or so.

I believe that cruise lines are pulling out because sales are down, not because Puerto Vallarta is unsafe. We spend time in Puerto Vallarta and surrounding area every year, and have never had any problem. We don't stay in all inclusive resorts, but rent cars and travel at will, staying in a small local PV hotel. Never have we felt unsafe.

We are coming to the Yucatan peninsula in 2 weeks and expect to do the same type of things. From things I've read, if you keep your wits about you most places are safe.

Many very good posts on this thread. I've felt safe on our 3 trips trips to the Rivera Maya, but wondered if it may be a bit worse than what I've experienced since I'm usually at an AI. Last trip we left the resort for a 1/2 day going to Puerto Morales and felt safe there. This year I think we'll venture out a little more, Akmul and Tulum. I'll probably be safer there than in my hometown.

Hola, mrfootball. I'm also from the Pittsburgh area. When my friends are all alarmed that I'm going to Mexico, I remind them of the local news every morning when there are reports of all the shootings and killings that happened overnight in the Burgh.

GO STEELERS!!

Just in case someone is looking at this thread and having any shadow of a doubt...

I felt safer in the Roo than I have in some large US cities. Everywhere you looked were police, military, and private security. The people were wonderful, and they truly want you to have a good time. If we left Akumal Playa (say to go to Akumal Pueblo to visit Ultimo Maya) It was noted. They knew when I got back, and there was someone watching the condo and the vehicles all night. were we safe? yes, both my wife and I felt very safe, and didn't feel like our privacy was being intruded upon even once.

Could you find trouble? sure, if you go looking for it.

I agree with Doug's map. The good old USA is more dangerous than the Roo. Like everywhere, watch your back.

Good relevant article from Washington Post.

Nice map. I tend bar, and it seems 50% of the time the people I mention Mexico to recoil in horror. This of course annoys me to no end, but I try to tactfully explain that it's a big country. I should keep this map behind the bar. It would be interesting to have a corresponding USA Map with the same data.

Just ran across this form and wanted to share with you a Map I think is really helpful that concentrates specifically in this region. Not sure if it's too small to view but you can see it in the link below too.

Also if you need more resources on Mexico Safety- this is updated weekly with the latest.

Maybe a map of the U.S. showing the dangerous areas would be a great comparison! I know there are MANY places I will not go right here in Michigan!!! Detroit, Flint and Saginaw, just for beginners!!!

I am so glad I started this post...now I refer my family and friends to it and say...shuddup... I could end up dead in my own hospital parking lots vs Akumal and surrounding areas... thank you all for the well voiced and well proofed confirmation that I am just heading to Beach Heaven....not Heaven above :) HUGS~
