According to this info, the main tourist areas in Mexico are deemed as safe. Those of us who visit the Roo know this but the media has painted a broad picture of Mexico as a high risk country to visit.

My mother-in-law worries herself to the nth degree when we are enjoying our time in the Roo. Even though I tell her that we are safer down there than she is in MSP, I can't convince her otherwise.

UPDATE- 2:58PM EST November 21. 2012 -

The U.S. State Department has updated its February 2012 travel warning to Mexico, making few essential changes but in an extremely detailed rundown getting even more specific about what to worry about where.

The good news for tourists is that, as in the past warning, most popular areas (including Cancun, the Riviera Maya, Mexico City, Los Cabos, Riviera Nayarit, Puerto Vallerta, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Merida, Chichen Itza, Huatulco and Oaxaca) are exempted.

I am not aware of a map showing the good and bad areas  in Roo/Mexico.....most of have been going down for many years and traveled around the area with little if any problems.....

Like going to any area in Mexico and the US....you have to be wise and stay within areas you feel comfortable....Akumal and the areas in and around are safe....

With all the press, swine flu...drug wars...weather, the resorts have been hit pretty hard and in many ways it sad....

You can't change those around who have never been to Mexico and ease their fears.....that is just the way it is....

Go and have fun.....

Gary, Babs and I are getting so tired of people telling us that Mexico is not safe that we have now changed our response. We tell them that at the airport we have to rent guards armed with machine guns to get us to the safety of our resort and that we carry machetes at all times for protection, but it is really easy to get drugs because they wash up on the shore every morning.

Thanks, that's actually a pretty good map.  Shows that I'm closer to the violence where I am in Texas than I would be in Akumal or Tulum.  I'm book marking this for use against my parents and in-laws!

Thanks for the link!  I just posted it to a person on FB that's downing people from going to RM.  Actually, if people believe that it's unsafe, it will be quieter for us!  ;)

So, you're saying there should be a 'danger' dot that tracks where you are at any given time in the Roo, eh?

While the gringo's are left alone, not so for Mexican's themselves, especially wealthly ones. We ended our trip last year at Le Meridien Cancun and it took a few days for me to really look and pay attention to figure out who all those guys were hanging around outside next to the large SUV's.  They were bodyguards for I'm guessing  wealthy Mexicans on vacation.  Kidnapping is a huge problem, the Zeta's got squeezed out of the drug trade and took up kidnapping.  I recently read the Zeta's are former Mexican special forces trained by the US!

from what I was told this year when we were in P.M. there is 1 drug gang that runs from cancun to playa and another that controls south of playa. If you can find a local newspaper it will sometimes tell you of the violence that happens in playa. That is where they clash.

Lets see, I can go out of my office, drive 30 minutes and be in an area that folks are shot at least once a day.......

There choice is, let what we read and hear drive you away or play it safe and go where it is safe.

Just sent hard copies of the info to my Dad & Aunt (who told me to watch out b/c they were dragging people off tourist buses...bah, haa, haa) The more info you know, the better it is where you go. Some people just don't take the time to do the research. So excited about going again and all the info on this website has really helped us feel confident in our travels to "the Roo". Thanks to you all!

Sure, the US has high crime areas but I don't think that some people, when they travel may pay attention to areas where they may consider vacationing. This map is a good tool for those who may consider driving and want to explore the country.

I have been to Mexico more than 100 times and there are few places I would consider renting a car and driving as a solo traveler. From living in Houston for many years I know a lot of the areas which are on the map and I wouldn't go to them even then.

Those of us that travel in any country would not risk unsafe travel and we welcome information. We know the difference between bad media and helpful information.

A friend of ours spent a few months in Jamaica, he was planning on moving down there.

He had a motorcycle and was traveling all over the island with a local friend. He looks like a biker. When they got near Kingston they ran into a group that wouldn't let them pass. At first it was a P***ing contest to see who was the bigger badass. They had a few words and then made friends and shared a beer and a smoke , well it was Jamaica. The new friend said it was a territory thing but also he could easily be killed because he was a white tourist.

He did make it into Kingston via another route and said he's never felt so vulnerable in his life, he couldn't wait to get out of there.

My mother freaks out everytime we go. We live an hour south of MSP and one of the local news, out of MSP, said that not going to the Cancun area would be like not going to Minnesota because of problems in Texas.

Things happen in good areas and things happen in bad areas. When it's your time it's your time. ( if you believe in that) . The roo is safe as we all know, but things do happen.

I do understand the fear people have of loved ones travelling to foriegn countries.
They love you and are concerned for your safety. Often the fear is of the unknown. The thoughts of being mugged in Florida, Califonia, New York are known problems and seem easier to take.
The Yucatan area is NOT clean of crime but, the incidence of crime against tourists inconsiquietial. Didn't spell that right did I?
Anyway, when travelling, pay attention to what you do and where you do it. Common sense right?
Is Mexico in the middle of a well publicized war on crime? You bet yer ass they are and they are winning!
I give praise to the freedom of the press to publisize all the incidents of crime, wherever it may be.
The same may not be said of Canada or the US.
I know areas of Vancouver that are not fit for tourists yet there is little if no reporting of the dangers here.
Similiar for Seattle, our sister city, I have been very reluctant to visit the downtown areas of Seattle.
Give me Akumal, Tulum, Valladolid, Merida, Xcakak or any of the pueblos in the Yucatan to the good ol' US of A anyday.
Sorry if I have offended but my life is is in the Yucatan, all of it!
Safety is yours to be had. Danger is for those who seek it.
Saludos,
Ron

Thank you! Like so many others, my mother in law just about has a stroke every time we plan a trip to the Roo. We have never felt in any danger while there. We live close to NYC and feel more threatened in certain areas there than in Mexico. Now, I can show her this info and maybe it will make her feel better although i do like the idea of hiring body guards and carrying our own guns. That might freak her out even more!
