A popular question on the board is where else in the world can you snorkel from shore? My wife and i just got back from the Turks and Caicos and had a great time snorkeling Smith's Reef from shore. I posted a trip report on it if anyone if is interested. FYI, DB

Glad you had a great time - we will check it out Our favourite is Roatan Apart from turtles, much better than Akumal Much warmer and a very tropical island - the food and seafood is sooooo good including beer and rum

Hey Glen, On Roatan, did you stay at Anthony's Key Resort by chance? If not where else do you recommend down there...firends had a house there for two years but we never got there before they moved back...always wanted to try it. The other BC Glen(n)

DB, Not sure when the "rules" will change re: US/Cuba but there is good shore snorkeling on the N coast of Cuba to at a place called Jibacoa. Best stag horn coral field I have ever seen. You would be very welcomed there as an American by the way...the fight is a political one! We also enjoyed the Cook Islands between HI and NZ...beautiful place/people but a long flt. G

Anthony's Key Resort on dive boats This is strictly a dive resort - little beach - most cabins on stilts over the water We went by it on a daily basis with our Dive Boats from Sandy Bay Other places on Roatan are West Bay - busiest but nicest - see http://buyroatan.blogs.com/ West End is a Dive community although Half Moon Bay is nice Sandy Bay is deserted and some nice snorkeling Excellent diving all around the island

Roatan was my top choice for this vacation but I could not sell my DW on the idea. It remains a future top destination. Bonaire is also at the top of my list but I haven't been able to find a flight path that worked for us to get there. I have read about visiting Cuba and hope to go there some day. I am afraid to run in to a reentry passport problem trying to visit right now however. DB

Roatan sounds good to me also and is on my radar if I can afford it, have to start checking. VSD, thanks for the recommendation of Sandy Bay as I had only heard of West End and do not dive With dbeitz on the Cuba thing, who wants to chance getting caught?
