with the hurricanes coming these past few weeks, it reminded me of a book I read last year, Are You Afraid of the Dark, by Sidney Sheldon pretty interesting, it's a conspiracy theory. I was reminded of it because I just heard on the news that Japan is creating the hurricanes in retaliation for Hiroshima. No kidding the radio announcer said, it's in USA Today. now that's a bunch of bloooohy but it reminded me of the book, so...whatcha readin' these days?

Currently working on "The Jane Austen Book Club," which is okay.... Just finished the 6th Harry Potter. I tried to not read the Harry Potter series - I usually try to avoid things that everyone else on the planet seems to be doing - but the truth is, I was looking for a fun book to read w/ my hubby at night and it seemed like a good candidate. We read the LOTR trilogy together when the movies were out which was GREAT and I was looking for something that would keep that tradition going. So I got sucked in! And once I got sucked in, well, then I went through those books like crazy. I also just picked up the Chronicles of Narnia, to take over from Harry Potter.... I remember reading "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" a LLOOOOOOONNNNGGGG time ago, so I thought it might be fun! And I'll need to bring some good books to the Roo in.... oh yeah, 43 days!!! WOOHOOO!

A couple of recent faves: The Life of Pi, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. A couple other recent reads: Kite Runner -- quite possibly the hardest book I've ever read (emotionally that is), and Running With Scissors, which was just WIERD.

PB - I read and loved Numbers 1 # 3 on your list and am about to start Number 2. I am also taking a Kathy Reichs books with me to Greece, I think that and the Curious Incident will be good holiday reading. It's also next month's book for our book group. Love my book group. We read Jane Austen Book Club last year - my Montreal Book Group was crazy about JA, so it seemed an appropriate read. Pokey - Da Vinci Code was very good, but, for the life of me, I have NO IDEA why it's been at the top of the best seller list for approx 100 years!!!! It's not exactly a masterpiece!

But that would mean less time spent on LG! As it is, I usually only read at bedtime, so it takes me forever to get through a book! quote:

Christy, have you read "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver? Now, that's a masterpiece. I also have "Prodigal Summer" in the house, but haven't read it yet. Pam - I agree that Angels and Demons is much better than the vastly overrated Da Vinci Code. An LG Bookgroup - now, that would be a challenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started the DaVinci Code last year, couldn't get into it; then picked it up last month and flew through it. I thought it was good, but didn't like how it ended. I wanna get Angels and Demons now. I read The Purpose Driven Life this summer with friends. I have to say my favorite author is Anne Rivers Siddons. I have read everything she has written over the years, and am going to buy her new one this weekend.

Pokeystipple and Lewesde, I have also read the Da Vinci code and left a copy at The Copacabana in RA in March. Bought it again a read it. Try Demons and Angels which is quite entertaining also (Robert Langdon strikes again) Still trying to find a copy of the Kon Tiki Expedition, which I read 6 times, lent it out but it never came back.

I agree with everyone else about Angels & Demons. It was written before the Da Vinci Code, so I read it first. The Da Vinci Code was then a little bit of a let down. Good book I am currently reading is "Crusader's Cross" by James Lee Burke. Excellent follow up to the rest of the Robicheaux novels. Other good books I have read in the last 2 weeks are "Straits of Power" by Joe Buff, excellent techno submarine warfare stuff, and "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton, which questions the "thruths" we are being spoon-fed in regards to global warming. OK

Rose, I concur with your analysis of the Da Vinci Code. I think some has to do with the heavy marketing of the book, but I believe most of it is related to the fascination North Americans have with Europe and European History. We probably take it for granted ourselves, but Dan Browns has a good story, it is well documented, and relies a lot on local lore and touristic sites. While quite successful in Europe, the novel did not do nearly as well as it did here. OK

Sorry, but I've got to agree with OK and Rose about the Da Vinci Code. It had a couple interesting, and probably valid, ideas about The Catholic Church and their treatment of women, but he practically beat you to death with them. (I'm not Catholic, BTW.) It DID force me to take a long look at "The Last Supper." The author tied the whole thing together with a pretty cheesy mystery. Did ANYONE not know who the bad guy was like 200 pages from the end? After a while I was wondering just how smart are the main characters? Overall, a pretty quick read...but I was left wondering what all the hoopla was about.

Latest book read: The History of the World in Six Glasses. It is a brief history of civilization through the development of beer, wine, distilled spirits, coffee, tea and Coca-Cola. Currently I am reading Guns, Steel and Germs by Jared Diamond. His latest book, Collapse, why civilizations choose to fail, has a very interesting chapter of the decline and collapse of the Maya Empire. Oh and for mind candy I read Carl Hiassen.

Rose, depending on how long you're in Greece, you may need to bring along a 3rd book! The Curious Incident will go *very fast*. I think it took me two days, maybe three. It was great though - I absolutely loved it, and was sad when I finished it. I also loved the Poisonwood Bible (Kingsolver) but haven't really tried her other books.... Another favorite was We Were the Mulvaneys, by Joyce Carole Oates. Very different from the rest of her books (no murder mystery or anything). I read it before Oprah picked it and proceeded to give it to everyone the following Christmas. For people who like family/relationship themes (not a romance, but family dynamics), it's fantastic. I'll have to check out some of these other authors! I know Kingsolver has written a lot of others. Are there any particular favorites out there besides the Poisonwood Bible? pb
