Restaurant review: Dining by the Light of the Little Moon

Can you imagine anything more romantic than enjoying a candlelit dinner set under the moon on a soft sand beach with the sound of waves lapping on the shore just a few feet from you table? La Lunita (the little moon) restaurant on Half Moon Bay in Akumal offers this unique ambiance at no extra charge.

This charming beach front bistro has been delighting locals and tourists alike for over 10 years. The restaurant has both indoor and patio seating as well as tables on the beach, so you can dig your toes in the sand while you enjoy a gourmet dinner. An ocean view bar serves beverages ranging from champagne cocktails to fresh lime juice margaritas. They also have a wine menu featuring wines by the glass of both domestic and imported wines.

La Lunita's dishes can be described as classic Mexican favorites with a contemporary Caribbean flair. Each dish begins with fresh, traditional, Mexican ingredients like poblano chiles, huitlacoche (corn mushroom) and plantains then combines them with Caribbean flavors such as coconut, mango and pineapple. After years of dining regularly at La Lunita, I have compiled a list of my favorite appetizers, entres and desserts. I have found these to be consistently delicious.

For starters, try the grilled scallops wrapped in spinach & served with vegetable escabeche & arbol chile vinaigrette - so good I have ordered it as an appetizer and then as my entre during the same meal! La Lunita's tortilla soup is a creamier version of the Mexican classic served with avocado, panela cheese, cream & pasilla chile - Que rico! Locals love the coconut shrimp La Lunita made with giant (really!) prawns. Here the beef is of the highest quality and always cooked to your liking, so try the spicy filet of beef tres chiles. For tasty meal closers try the fried sweet potato with vanilla ice cream or the Cafe La Lunita prepared table side

La Lunita is located in the Hacienda de las Tortugas hotel on Half Moon Bay and is open for dinner Monday through Saturday from 5PM to 10:30PM. A little tip: For a most romantic dinner, reserve a table on the night of a full moon.

We've been enjoying La Lunita for more than 8 years.  Just wonderful.  I cannot praise the tortilla soup enough.  And the margaritas are to die for.  One regret: when you write about this place and don't keep it a secret, more people come to eat, fewer chances just to show up and get a prime table on the beach.

Reservations for 7pm on Saturday the 2/16. I've been remiss in not trying this place over the years. Well no more. I specifically requested a table close to the water.

I love the setting. The last visit in November though we were a little disappointed. Prices much higher. My grilled fish had almost doubled what it had been a couple years ago. Love the ambiance though and will be back next trip as always.

What's dinner for 2 Kim? I seem to remember you posted $45 or something like that.

$42.00 US plus 20% tip. That was 2 entree's (chicken & grilled fish which are probably the cheapest on the menu ) and 2 margaritas. No appetizers or dessert or anything. I think that is a reasonable price for the romantic ambiance and setting. They had a ton of duck type frou frou more gourmet items that were more expensive.

La Lunita isour first stop after we drop the suitcase off in the vila at HMB. We arrive in the early evening and after a long travel day La Lunita is the best place to chill and enjoy the food and the view of the moon over the water.

Our last night meal every trip, celebrating a wonderful time. I would not miss it. I love how they utilize authentic ingredients and recipes. My husband has the filet mignon con tres chiles every time, great!
