LG Party in PoMo, Spring 2019

We are trying to plan a Locogringo get together for spring 2019.  As always, any and all folks are welcome!
The best time for Babs and I will be around the first week of May. We are thinking of staying at the Hotel Hacienda Morelos which is located on the beach and only about a block from the main square.

https://en.haciendamorelos.com/?_ga=2.63603439.1521843786.1537101570-1438797305.1537101570

I have tried to negotiate a group rate with them, but their replies have been slow and not very responsive to my questions.  Also, the best price they could provide us was $90 US per night and I can find better prices than that on several booking sites. My current plan is to book our stay using Expedia  as we can get a pretty good deal by combining flights and hotel using them. If you Google the hotel you may find another site you would prefer, such as booking.com.

Anyways, all comments and questions are welcome, who else is interested?

Wag more....bark less.

Hey Badger, I checked rates direct online with HM for first week in May and it was a special nonrefundable rate for $57.  Que pasa?   Not sure if I will be joining in....thinking about my trip in two weeks and then March, but you just never know.  Thanks for trying to orchestrate this event.  MB

MB, that's a great price considering that breakfast is included. I'll have to check that out later, last time I looked the price was much higher. Thanks!

C&C, yes, planning on seeing you two then, but I wish more people would check in and give their opinion. I just found out that I might have a big job that they will want me to start the first week of May, so thinking now about the last two weeks of April?

Hi Paul.  I seem to remember that most places start the 'low season' rates on May 1st. Right now I'm flexible but will have to let you know closer to your planned dates.

Yes, Bernie, you are right, the price on their website shows a drop to $57/night beginning the 1st of May. We may have to use that as the starting date.

Hi Badger!  Thank you so much for trying to set this up for all of us!!!

We were definitely planning on going but our family trip in the summer had to be rescheduled to the week of April 13-21.  I'm still wanting to come down but I'm not sure if I could talk Tim into taking another week off so soon ~ even just a couple of weeks later in May might work better.

As you well know, it all depends on his jobs too ~ he's going to be swamped this winter and early spring which is great news but if there are rain delays that could be a problem too.

Please know how much we would love to see you all ~ what a hoot it would be for all of us to be there at the same time!!!  I'll start looking for a new bathing suit in the mean time ~ the ones I have now would show the Depends that I will have to wear while being around you guys and your jokes!!!

Aw, Susy, we would love to see you again! The more I think about it, the more it looks like the first week of May for Babs and I, and because of work we may only be able to stay one week.
Yesterday I did hear from a long time LGer who hasn't posted in a while, who plans on being there the first week of May with his wife and another LG couple. Looks like the party is starting to come together.
Does anyone know if the usual AASB group is going to be in Akumal around that time? Maybe we can rent a van and go see them?

I will be with Tammi and her group at ABBWR from April 24 to May 3rd. There are others who will be there basically the first week of May. If you are on FB, Sergio posted yesterday asking what everyone is doing.

Excellent PJ, really look forward to seeing you again and meeting SJ for the first time. Since we usually travel midweek to get cheaper flights, Babs and I will probably be there from May 1-8.

Some great news yesterday, looks like Chicago Craig and Margaret, along with Tony and Joanne will also be joining us. Their dates are May 2-6. Craig is talking about having a Kentucky Derby Day party at La Sirena Sports Bar and Restaurant, should be fun.

Hi Badger!  I was looking at your Hacienda Morelos link and then looked on Trip Advisor ~ while we aren't fancy or picky about where we stay, the reviews on Trip Advisor aren't that great ~ for every good review there were a couple of bad ones.  I always take reviews on TA with a grain of salt ~ some people will find something to bitch about no matter where they stay but I'm curious as to what your thoughts are.  We're used to cold showers and hard beds ~ that's part of the adventure of going to Mexico!  I couldn't believe that people complained about the sargassum on the beach and the brown water ~ there is nothing that the hotel can do about that and if you're traveling somewhere and you don't research, then shame on you!  I was wondering if this is where you all are planning on staying?  I definitely want to stay where everyone else is ~ again, just curious!

Susy, HM recently upgraded the rooms, new, softer mattresses and totally new bathrooms, we had no problems with hot water the last few times we have stayed there. The location is fantastic, with a great ocean view and it's located only about a block from the main square and a large variety of restaurants. The included breakfast is good, and it's nice to have a bar and restaurant on site. Also, there is a snorkel and dive shop on premises. And off street parking is available right there. A brand new Chedraui supermarket is now being built directly across the street, which will be handy for drinks, snacks, etc.
When I get a chance I'll try to post a few of our photos of the place.

I guess I'm late to the party but not too late to join in.
Of course I'll be there baring unforseen issues.  I'll start looking for airfare.

Susy, I stayed at Hacienda Morelos last spring with no issues.  It was a second floor room with a good size balcony but the balcony furniture was not comfy and there was no overhead cover so the balcony was too hot to stay out on except for mornings.  I liked the downstairs rooms by the pool better.  They had lounges and overhead cover on the patio.  However the patio is not a private patio per say.  It's very close to the pool so there is foot traffic.
The restaurant had great breakfast food.   I don't think we ate there much other than breakfast.  The bar and restaurant is exceptionally handy and close to the pool also.  It's an excellent location for beach front close in town.
I'm pretty sure we had a coffee maker but can't remember if there was a mini fridge.  I think so.  Badger or Bosco probably remember.

I hope everyone can come.

OMG!!!  My palms are all sweaty ~ I just hit the "Book Now" button!!!

I talked to Tim about it this morning and he looked at me like I was crazy!  He said, aren't we going on a cruise in April and I said yes, but that this was going to be so special because so many of you guys were going and it would be the best time ever.  I then went on to promise him that I would start selling all of my collectible crap and that to not worry about the cost.  He said, it's not the money, it's the time off from work!  I assured him that we wouldn't be gone that long like we usually are ~ he shrugged his shoulders and said ~ all right, we'll go!

We've never done something so crazy and irresponsible like this ~ I feel like I could throw up!!!

I'm SO excited ~ I can't wait to see you all!!!

Susy, that is wonderful news!!!

I believe the rooms do have a coffee maker, but I'm pretty sure that you have to pay extra for a refrigerator. The time we stayed there with C&C we brought along a cooler which we then filled with drinks and ice and shared in front of one of the ground floor rooms.

For anyone interested in booking thru Expedia, do a search there by starting with the dates you prefer from your departure airport, then for destination put in "Puerto Morelos". Do NOT put in Cancun. Then click on "Hotel/Flight" package for your preferred dates, once the next screen loads, click on the "Price" option near the top and HM should show up in the first few listings. Chris just got a great price for their trip.

The odd looking boat is the ferry for trucks.  It docks one end at a terminal, trucks drive on, then it docks the other end at a terminal and the trucks drive off.  Kind of like a floating bridge.

In the morning before I leave, I am booking room 101 & 102, at the end by the pool, unless someone previously specified.  I'm booking an extra room, or possibly 2, just in case.  You never know who will surprise us at the last minute and need a room.  Plus they are so cheap NOW.

Another fabulous day in paradise.  More later.  I gotta pack and shower.

I can answer probably any questions you may have.
NO NEED for a fridge.  The Chedurai will be 20' across from the lobby and the security parking gates.  A $2.00 styro cooler and a trip across a couple days for a bag of ice, great wine, cheap booze and everything else you could possibly want.  Peso exchange rate currently is approx 19 to 1.  My favorite French Dijon is $2.00 vs. $8.00 home.

Gem, I think you and Tatt would enjoy PM.
One thing we really like is that it is so cheap and easy to get to from the airport on the ADO bus and then a very cheap taxi to the port area. Also the fact that you can leave the airport and be in PM in about 30 minutes.

I just found a website based in PM that has some good info for those of you not so familiar with the town. I suggest scrolling down a bit and then on the right clicking on the "2018 Year in Review"  to begin.

BeachBilly, just a reminder for you to make sure you inform your bank of the dates you will be in Mexico so that you can use your debit card to get pesos. Good news is that there are now 2 ATMs in the new Chedraui Selecto right across the street from Hacienda Morelos.

Badger, Is US money readily accepted? I don't even use my debit card at the gas pumps here. And I freaked out when I mistakingly used my debit card to book my trip. I don't use it on the computer either. Can you say paranoid? I always notify my CC companies when I go to Mexico.

If you pesos are a must, I'll see if I can get some here.

Badger
BB, yes, every place that you will be spending money at like restaurants and the Chedraui will take U.S. dollars and give you change in pesos.  Even the taxi drivers and most street vendors will accept them. The only thing is you will not receive a great exchange rate, but since you will only be there for a few days, it shouldn't be too bad. Also, at the end of your trip if you have any extra pesos I will gladly buy them from you with dollars.
(and give you a pretty good rate.)

I thought I would post a list of some of our favorite restaurants, if you check them out on the Trip Advisor Puerto Morelos Restaurants section you can see some great food porn photos.

Our favorite "upscale" restaurants...

Taninos, Punta Corcho, El Campanario, and La Sirena. Even though I consider them upscale, you can get a great meal at any of them for about $10-15 U.S.

Medium Priced Places

Our all around favorite, with what we think is the best seafood  and margaritas in town, El Pesquero, be sure to tell them Pablo sent you, although Pablo (me) will probably already be there.
Note: opens at 1 pm, kitchen closes at 8.

Best burger in town, a relatively new place, Burger Underground, great selection of brew pub style burgers at a good price.

Our favorite pizza and pasta place is My Little Italy, owned by a very, very nice gentleman from.....Italy.

A very good breakfast can be had at El Nicho, known for their variety of Eggs Benedict.

Cheap Eats

The two best cheap eats places on the port side, Caribelos and Tuch Tlan can't be beat for authentic breakfast and lunch. At Caribelos you can get a shrimp omelet for about the equivalent of $3, huevos rancheros are even less than that, tortas for lunch for about $2 . Not quite as large a selection at Tuch Tlan, but great food and similar prices. Their serving of Chilaquiles is huge!

We can also recommend several places in La Colonia, but better to ask me in person so I can give directions.

Also, most evenings in the center of the town square there is a small stand selling marquesitas and churros, traditional Mexican dessert type treats, definitely try them!

One more thing, on some days you may see/hear the fruit and vegetable trucks that drive slowly around town announcing in a droning loudspeaker voice what wares they are selling that day, definitely check them out.  We can usually buy a pint bag of sweet, fresh orange juice for about the equivalent of 50 cents and all of their fruits and veggies are "just picked" fresh and also cheap!

Starting to look good that I will be able to join you guys for Adult Spring Break.
I'm thinking of arriving in CUN on Tue. 4/30 and spending several days to a week in Po Mo at Hotel Hacienda Morelos before going down to Akumal and staying with my buddy Steve in his new condo in HMB for the second week.
Steve won't do Po Mo so I'd be looking to share a room with someone if anyone else is going solo.
Matter of fact, I spend very little time in my room so would even consider sleeping on a couch or cot if anyone wants to cut the cost of their room rate.

Here's a cool site of Po Mo.
http://www.puertomorelos.com/en/accommodation/hotels/hacienda-morelos
Scroll down to the map and zoom in on restaurants and other attractions and click on the name for pics, or you can drag the little yellow person icon and release it on the street for street view. You can then navigate around town by advancing along the street and stopping and doing a 360 at desired stops.
I spent several hours on this site refamiliarizing myself with Po Mo. Fun time

Badger, I LOVE pastor tacos! I'm looking at Taqueria Mike's and they look awesome. Your thoughts please?https://www.google.com/ma...4d-86.8764023?hl=en-US

Mapes, added you to the list, great news!
Yes, Cancun Billys has been closed for quite a while now, but one of the former owners, Joe, now owns Burger Underground, we had awesome burgers there last night.

Bimmy, looked briefly at your link and I have never heard or seen Taqueria Mike, certainly not in that location. I do, however, know where you can get Tacos Al Pastor on the port side.

Bimmy, just had a chance to look at that link again and I thought that building that looked familiar, it does, because last night we ate there, only it now is Burger Underground. It was only Taqueria Mike's for a short time and the food was excellent, but many of those small places like that disappear from trip to trip. There is a place just down the street from there that makes tacos al pastor in the afternoon called El Sazon de Mexico, I'll take you there.

Badger, when you refer to the port (left) side are you referring to south of the town square?
What's the name and location of this place? I'll search for it.
What about Tacos.com on the north side? Do they have good Al Pastor tacos?
I'm thinking Tuch Tlan might be a short walk from HHM where I can get good tacos at a reasonable price.
Can't wait amigo!!!

Bob, the locals call the beach town area "Puerto" or port. The pueblo is referred to as La Colonia.

Not sure if Tacos.com does Al Pastor, but the price there is over double what you would pay at a place like El Sazon de Mexico. El Sazon is relatively new place, probably not on g-maps. I hope to find time before the trip to make up maps for everyone showing our favorite places to eat. I posted some food pix from El Sazon on the BC thread yesterday.

I talked to our friend Charlie Brown yesterday and he said he can bring a boat directly to Hacienda Morelos to pick up snorkelers. Here is a video shot on the reef, Charlie can be seen near the end.

Thanks Badger,
El Sazon IS on G maps. I checked it out and it is exactly the kind of place I'm looking for. Looks a little far to walk but I suppose a little exercise won't hurt this old man. I'm sure I'll find some other places south of the square closer to HHM that have good cheap tacos also. (Tuch Tlan)
That would be sweet if Charlie Brown picks us up at HHM beach to take us out to the reef. Do you know his cost?
I hate bringing up cost but being retired has me on a budget and if I stick to it I can go on vacation more often.

It looks like you guys are having perfect weather and a wonderful time.  I'm loving all of your food pictures!  You had mentioned that the HM has refrigerators to rent ~ we will definitely want one for our room ~ is that something that I can arrange ahead of time so that it will be nice and cold when we get there?  If so, do you know how I would contact them to make those arrangements?

Hi Susy,
The advantage to having a Styrofoam cooler is we can take it down to the pool/beach area and avoid having to walk back up to our room to snag another beer/drink. I'm lazy, sucks to be me. LOL
We can walk right across the street to refill our coolers with ice and beer/drinks once a day.

Bimmy, Babs talked to Charlie Brown yesterday and he said the base rate is now $30 U.S. per person, but with more people and repeat trips you can probably get a lower rate.

Susy, how large of a suitcase do you bring on trips? I now have to bring a large size to bring gifts down here to my friends and gifts back home for others. I have a wheeled cooler that I fill full of my clothes for the trip down ( bought at Walmart) and I use the cooler at the beach. I'll post a pic of it when I can.

Bimmy, yes, I told a couple of places that we were bringing a gang of locos.

Babs and I prefer to take the ADO bus to PM, walk out of the airport and bear to your right, buy a ticket at the kiosk near the bus, then once you arrive in PM grab a taxi to HM. On return to airport we always take a taxi door-to-door, les than $25.00 U.S.

I still don't like the use of styrofoam coolers, they break easily and many end up littering the streets or beaches eventually. Twirls said Bernie has a soft sided cooler with wheels that he brings.  If all else fails I will try to bring my 2 small coolers for someone to use.

BB, yes, taxis are extremely easy to find, Chedraui is right across the street from HM and there are almost always at least 2 taxis waiting for customers in the parking lot on the other side of Chedraui. BTW, all of the Taxistas love taking someone to the airport, as that is one of their most lucrative routes compared to the dirt cheap prices they charge in PM itself.

I'll be in HMB from 5/6-5/12.

Badger had mentioned about possibly getting a van to shuttle a bunch of peeps down tp Akumal for a get together with the AASB gang. You still plan on doing this Paul?

Is the included breakfast that HHM is offering us a continental breakfast or a full breakfast? Do you have options to choose off a menu?

Hey Bimmy, No, I have not made any definite plans on renting a van, I thought we would wait until we all arrive and then gauge the interest in doing so.

The free breakfast at HM has changed since the last time we stayed, it is still a full breakfast, but limited choices. It does include eggs to your taste, with frijoles and chips, a fruit plate, coffee and juice. If you like you can order other items off the menu at additional cost.
Coffee is available each morning around 7 am, but they no longer have coffee makers in the rooms.

Right now she is not having luck with affordable airfare. Around $700 from here in Lexington, and a little more from her nearest airport in Northern Kentucky (CVG). Ridiculous!

BB, I just did a search on Expedia for a package deal, but only spending one night in a hotel (Posada Amor, which she wouldn't have to actually stay at) and the price with flight (United leaving LEX at 7:40, arriving CUN 12:50) was $631. If she is interested in that, tell her to do an Expedia Flight/Hotel search from LEX to PUERTO MORELOS (not CUN) for your dates and once the "choose your hotel" page comes up, click on sort by price.

Food is great. Las Aguachiles last night. Fogon (and their best tacos for lunch). Off to Pizza / Italia tonight

I was just going to mention Derby Day and that I'd be watching it at La Sirena.  I notice that it's been acknowledged that it will be the best place (probably) to watch it.  I've been watching the races lately to get a feel of the field. I hope CC is doing some kind of game thing.  I don't know if I can use my kindle for my betting websites.  I better check that out!

What dates work best for the rest of you peeps who want to do the boat snorkel?
I know some of you will be arriving later than me.
Being that the Derby Party is on Sat. 5/4, how about either Fri. 5/3 or Sun. 5/5 ?

We can do a Cenote whenever but we leave PoMo around noon on the 4th. I believe we are giving Joe & Connie a lift to ABR.......not sure on that

Bernie, A lot of peeps are first arriving on 5/2 so I'm thinking maybe 5/3 would be a good day before you guys leave. You want to throw that date out to Andrea, Joe and Connie and see what they think?

Sundog, you and Deb arrive on 5/2 so will 5/3 work for you?

Maple & Sweetie, will 5/3 work for you guys?

Chris & Cindy and CC & Margaret and Badger & Babs,..... I believe want to go. Yes?

Anyone else interested.....and is 5/3 a good date for you?

Bimmy,

I think Andrea just wanted to go out with Joe & Connie and not looking to do a one day group snorkel thing.
I will let her work it out when Joe & Connie arrive and they can go out the day that the weather is nice and at a time they wish to leave. Joe's reads the forums so he will chime in if he wants to do a group thing.

I may just eat, drink and repeat.

Why do you need "planned" events?  I figured everyone would do what they want and probably form small groups who want to do the same that particular day.  I plan to do whatever feels right at the time.

I'm game for any snorkeling, any day. I'll certainly set up an organized tour for those that would like to do that; easy-peezey. Planning on snorkeling off-shore too. But with only 6 full days, not going to over-plan/be responsible....

I also am interested in snorkeling, mostly from shore......but I'd probably go out on a boat also.
And we want in on the burger party and the Derby party.   But I can't commit to days/dates yet.

I guess it's just a habit from all the years going to AASB when there were many people staying at different resorts and we would plan events so we could all get together (pub crawls, fishing derby, cenote trips, fund raisers at Lol Ha, etc.). We had a lot of fun doing those planned events together.
I was hoping we'd all kind of hang together on this trip, I don't like forming small groups.
I just thought a group snorkel would be a lot more fun, no biggie.
Other than going to the Derby Party so I can see CC and his gang, that was all I had planned on doing.
Peace, Bimmy

It's easily walkable(for most) to Ojo de Agua and the free snorkelling area.  The food and service used to be very good.  I haven't been there in years but Mayajerney and I thought it had the best guacamole on the coast in about 2005.

BTW, I don't care for Pelicanos , which is very close.  I also haven't been there in years except for drinks.  Another restaurant right next door and I've never tried it.  I heard its good.  There area few beachfront places I haven't tried.

Those of you who are members of the annual football "Losers Pool" know about my "potty mouth" ~ in spite of how I act and what I say at times, I really am very shy and it's hard for me to meet new people!

That being said, I have to say that I appreciate the information about "events" or dates of gatherings for when we are all in Puerto Morelos!  I always worry about barging in on someone's plans or tagging along when we weren't really invited or meant to be included.  So, by posting dates and events I know that it means it's for everyone and Tim and I can choose to attend or not attend.

Unfortunately, Tim's knees and legs aren't the greatest after all of his years working so we might not be able to do everything that you all are doing but we sure will give it our best try!!!
