ABR is full, other Option??

Ok, I have never had a problem getting a room at ABR and there are no vacancies for November 13-20. is that a busy time? we usually go earlier in November (around day of the dead) but was surprised when last night it was booked for those dates. I don't think I want to stay there when it is full anyway. I can't imagine a full ABR with just one dinning area.
Anyway, I like ABR with the close beach, the all inclusive, nice staff and the price. any other suggestions? I don't think I can find a place that will beat the price at ABR but maybe some of you have some idea's, I would love to hear them. I can't believe I am saying this (as ABR was our vacation home for 4 years, 3-4 times a year), Maybe even a different country but where am I going to find a beach destination like ABR for $125 a night I have been paying? maybe they are out there. Or maybe if you know you are keeping it a secret like I tried to do with ABR :O)

Hotel Akumal Caribe is very nice but not AI although they do include a continental breakfast which you could upgrade for just a few bucks. Will be more than $125 per night though, think LG has them listed at $139 plus tax. Same great beach I read here a month or so ago that they were going to remodel the rooms last month also. Or I have read good things about Oasis Tulum, couple of the folks from LG have stayed there recently, Noodle Lady was one. Check the trip reports forum, might have to go back a page or so.

Maybe it is because bldg. 5 may be closed.....Renato told me they were going to close it for repairs or something? That would only leave bldg. 6 or 7. I don't think they are putting guests in bldg. 4 any more but we requested it anyway. Last May we had 2 rooms in 4 (one for a friend) R U looking thru large travel agencies or have you tried LG?

One time we couldn't stay at ABR so we went to Catalonia Playa Maroma and LOVED it. It is about the size of ABR and the beach is gorgeous! Bldg 6 is the best, then bldg. 5. The food is wonderful too. good luck!

ABR for $125 per night? For two? In November? Is that fathomable? If so, that is a great deal. We used to go there when it was affordable and a good value for your money. We stayed there in 2009 for $112 per night, before they bumped all their rates north.

It's just my opinion here but if you would try booking a condo through LocoGringo (sorry, I don't have their web site[:D]) you may never want to go back to ABR.

There are many condo options for the rate you stated and the freedom from the AI world is wonderful.

When pricing out hotels, keep in mind tha Hotel Akumal Caribe is $139 +tax for 2 people, not one. Would come to about $150 for 2 compared to $250 for 2 at ABR. That gives you $100 per day to spend on food and drinks which is very comparable, especially if you use the continental breakfast at HAC and put some cold drinks and snacks in your fridge.

If ABR has a special that is $125 for 2, then no wonder they are full.

I only wish I were faced with making these decisions. Alas, I have no ticker.

compared to $250 for 2 at ABR

No one pays that rate except at peak xmas times

Usually you can get a room around $170 for two

About equal to HAC, but then you get free food/drinks with ABR

Do you know how long building 5 is going to closed, from when to when? We just booked for end of October and had requested this. But if we can get a good room in Bldng 4, I'm game. Never been a fan of how far away 6 and 7 are.

Hey Mono - Think you will love Oasis Tulum. We are paying $161 a night for two, all inclusive and are going back for the third time this year Nov. 5 -14 so look for us if you go. It is 5 minutes from Akumal Bay, the snorkeling from the beach is awesome. It is a smaller resort so you will make friends quickly. The food is very good. If you want to be fancy you can book the Grand Oasis Tulum for a bit more, but the Oasis is fine for us. Hope to see you there.

We're staying at the Grand Oasis Tulum for the first time, what with all the changes at ABR. At any rate, we booked the whole vacation through Locogringo for the week before Christmas... it broke down to less than $70 per person/per day for the AI hotel. As mentioned, this will be our first time at GOT, but the price was certainly right, so if the beach snorkeling is good, everything else will be icing. (the odd thing.... the Oasis side was more expensive than the Grand side when we booked. Go figure).

I'm a very frugal shopper, and found that LG had better prices than everyone else for the week we chose.

ABR is doing well. From Vancouver, at Christmas it's sold out, except the Friday before the holidays at $2200 per person for the week if you leave on the Friday...but I can't do that as work forbids me to take holidays before the holidays..I think I won't travel to Mexico again until I'm retired.. so sad..

I have to second Tomas on this. Do the math, and you'll figure out that with an AI, you're really just giving a lot of your money away for convenience of not having to mess with money.

Some of the most memorable times I've had in Mexico were days where we cooked and enjoyed our own breakfast and lunch at our leisure, instead of having to rely on what a restaurant thought we might want. Plenty of long days spent looking at the beach from the condo patio without having to worry about towel games. And deciding whether to grill for dinner or head down the beach or walk a few minutes into Akumal for dinner. Free yourself from the bracelet. You might just like it and you'll save a lot of cash.

We have done condos, AIs, B&Bs

Do you math

We sometimes get great deals at ABR for $170 or less for two of us - and if you have great company / friends at ABR - priceless

Other times , we have got a fantastic 1-2 bedroom condo in HMB for around $100

No double posting here (smile)

That's probably a suitable question for the LG reservation team.

yikes! We are booked at ABR for nov 19 to the 26th. Not liking that it may be full. Thats one of the reasons we booked for mid November thinking it was not high season but also because the weather should be nicer. Went last year for the first week in november and loved it at that time of year. We were hoping to ask for Bldg 4 this time or at least Bldg 6. Now I'm hearing that Bldg 4 might not be available too. Which bldg is staff quarters? is Bldg 3 still there? I plan on calling ABR two days before we leave to see if we can request a certain building.

About half of 3 is still there and is being used for staff only.

There were guests in 4 in late August....now,,,who knows? I would definitely call to get the latest status. Good luck!

I changed my dates to earlier in November and was able to get a reservation at ABR for 4 nights. I am apprehensive about the booking and because I never have been when the place is fully booked, I hope the reason is remodeling building 5. I will find a condo the other 3 nights and have the best of both worlds. I was looking into Oasis Tulum but it just didn't feel right. I kinda got a feel for ABR and even though there may be aspects of it that are better, I don't know, it is like starting over, a new relationship, I guess I am not ready. We like Catalonia Tulum but because we come down several times a year, It doesn't work in our budget( We try to go twice for the price of One). Grand Palladium was fun the time we went but again more expensive and probably too big. The buffet at ABR suits us fine with healthy choices and variety. A La Carte is not necessary but what I noticed is that the other buffets at other resorts disappoint us with the crowdedness and unique selection. I know, I know, ABR can cut corners but it seems to give me enough to satisfy. But if the Buffet room is packed that will be a pain. I will let you all know what my experience was like. Please continue with conversation on alternatives, options and what is going on at ABR.
My take(if they are not remodeling) is that they are unloading the rooms with discounters and keeping the place full. maybe overseas agents or the big USA ones, who knows. I just like it the way is was. half full and a open cabana for everyone. I guess those days are over. :O(

We stayed at OX last year, and took the collectivo to Akumal, then walked to ABR to drop off a photomontage. When we mentioned that we had wanted to stay at ABR but it was booked, Renato said that it was not because there were so many visitors, but because so many of the rooms were closed. So you probably don't have to worry about overcrowding.

stayed at ABR in early  May and then got a condo for out last week (Mi Casa Del Mar)

Just around the point from the Cannon House)

Had a great time eating at various places, getting flattened chicken and shopping at the Pueblo

One year (son's wedding) we stayed at another resort

Only 5 minutes from ABR / Akumal  - sure - what a pain

Pack up, get a tram to the hwy, wait for a colectivo or taxi /  pay, find a place on the beach

1 HOUR LATER - I get to snorkel

Does anyone have any real Answers on what's going on with bldng 5? Is it under renos or what? Like said earlier, booked for end of October. Was hoping for a great vacay with no surprises, just another great holiday at ABR.

Insight from people there or from people in the know.

Thanks

Last year we had a few nights when it was full because a Brazilian bowling team was there for a tournament. I had visions of feathers and sequins but it turned out to be a lot of average looking middle aged folks in bowling shirts, but they were pretty good dancers.

Just booked for a week starting Nov 30. Haven't been there since 2008 and we were hoping for it to be somewhat quieter at this time of year as we used to go in February. Also Building 5 is our favorite one so really would like to get any info on what's going on, if anything.

That was such a fun wedding and we are still grateful for the experience. Probably the only Canada/Poland wedding I'll ever have seen in my life.[:D]

But, wow, visiting that mega resort was rather eye-opening. That place is so huge it probably has its own zip code.[:D]

Free yourself from the bracelet.

What a great way of putting it, Solman. A whole ad campaign popped into my head with that one! As much as I don't want to give up on ABR because it really suits me as a solo traveller, when the resort/condo/whatever opens up next door, things will be a little different. And until then it's construction....

were staying at ABR 11-9 to 11-15, its coming fast! When I called they didn't say anything about building 5 being closed or an over abundance of people being there that week however with more than one building missing I imagine they book up fast. Glad you got the dates rearranged and are able to go back

Being 'full' when they've shut down buildings 1 though 5 is totally different than when they were full with all buildings occupied, as it was the first t and 2nd time we went. It was still run by Venta back then and it was pretty busy with Europeans. It's all good!
